Sutter and Kaiser Basic Hospital Information

Hospital: It is not feasible to “pre-lab” in these units for obvious reasons! We will inform you the week before what unit we think you will be in, but the census can vary a lot from unit to unit and day to day. Therefore you must be prepared to be in any unit. Karen Clark (Kaiser) or Cathy Clark (Sutter) will assign you to a unit when you arrive at the hospital. Bring databases with you.

At Sutter: On your skills day, you will meet Cathy Clark in the cafeteria at Sutter. Bring you medication test and your completed STAR packet. Parking: At Sutter: Please park on the side of the hospital (but not in the first three rows!). If it is dark, please walk to your cars as a group. Security guards are also available (as are an occasional mountain lion!!). You need to wear your own scrubs. Meet Cathy in the cafeteria. You need to have an SSU picture ID name tag on at all times. You can only wear post earrings and can't have anything else pierced (that shows!). Also for infection control reasons, you can't have acrylic nails or nail polish and you will be scrubbing in before you start your shift. Your nails are not supposed be be longer than the tips of your fingers. Bring a minimum of stuff with you as there is no place for us to keep items.

At Kaiser: Always wear Kaiser green badge (will get on orientation day) and SSU student badge

Cell Phones:  Only to be used for Epocrates or Apps to look up medical/nursing stuff
No taking pictures or facebooking allowed, no personal calls
(Can text instructor)

First Clinical Day:  Meet instructor at 6:45am 3rd floor by security officer

Food:  Bring lunch or if not snacks if assigned to L/D or cafeteria open till 7pm

Parking:  Park in front of hospital towards back or in garage, try to carpool if possible

Schedule:  Meet at 6:45, Report at 7:00am, Lunch 30 minutes, Post Conference 3:30-5:30pm (TBA)

Skills Day:  October 20th TBA 8:00-5:00pm. Bring your completed medication test.

Uniform:  Wear scrubs to clinical and may change to hospital scrubs depending upon area assigned

Valuables:  Leave any valuables in car or just don’t bring

Taking care of yourself:

There are refrigerators you can use if you bring meals. Each hospital has a cafeteria. You are to take meal breaks. Be sure to report off to your resource nurse before you take a break. Getting in the habit of leaving the floor and putting your feet up for a while is a necessary habit to develop. You will see many nurses "eating on the run" and it is important for our own physical and mental health to take a break so start practicing now! This does not mean you are a wimp! You will be a more efficient, careful and caring nurse if you are rested yourself. Mistakes are made when we are tired and frazzled.
