Psychology 441, Qualitative Methods

This course familiarizes you with the methods and techniques of qualitative research. We learn about different approaches, learn different qualitative techniques, design a qualitative research study, submit a research proposal, conduct the research, analyze the data we accumulate, and write it up. The final projects are a write-up of the research study, an oral presentation of the work, and a public poster presentation.

This is a hands-on, lab-oriented, collaborative class. We will be working each week, in class, on techniques in qualitative research. Because of the skills learned in class, regular class attendance is essential. We will also be having regular guests come in to talk about their research.

At the end of the semester, we will give oral presentations on our work. During exam week, we will join with other Psychology Department research students in presenting our work in a poster session in the Student Union.

Part of doing research is being familiar with the work done in the field you are investigating. This means that students must be proficient in the use of library skills and know how to find articles in library journals and though internet databases. By the end of February, all students must attend library workshops at Schulz on the following three topics: Finding books; Finding articles; and Web Searching. Signed workshop attendance forms must be turned in by Feb. 28 in order to receive credit.
