Sonoma State University is joining CICORE

We're developing a system to monitor water quality parameters including temperature, salinity, turbidity, irradiance and chlorophyll fluorescence continuously from outer coast locations between Pt. Reyes and the Russian River. The units will be attached to rocky platforms in the intertidal zone at outer cost locations and will transmit data via satellite back to our website for access by researchers, natural resource managers and the interested public. Headlands (such as Pt. Reyes) and river plumes are significant environmental features in coastal habitats that can influence ecosystem production, the distribution and dispersal of nearshore marine organisms, as well as the transport of anthropogenic contaminants. Our initial unit will be deployed at Bodega Head inside the Bodega Marine Reserve with expansion to additional sites in subsequent years. Water quality data from these locations will aid in studying changing temporal and spatial patterns of primary production in coastal waters, the oceanographic factors that influence coastal communities, and support efforts to effectively manage and understand coastal ecosystems.
