Rethinking "Face to Face"

Description

This 14-week, 3-unit, graduate-level course is designed for faculty who wish to teach online. Faculty participants will develop an online learning community. They will learn how to rethink their face-to-face courses for teaching in the online classroom. They will collaborate together in a variety of learning activities that will enable them to transform a selected face-to-face course in their discipline to an online venue. This course is structured so that learners experience what it's like to be an online student as well as an online instructor. Course assignments will be graded. Upon successful completion of the course, faculty learners will receive certification as an SSU online instructor.

Learning Objectives and Topics

Participants will

  1. develop an online community of learners with each other.
  2. engage in a variety of online learning activities.
  3. examine how people learn online.
  4. compare the advantages and limitations of the online and face-to-face classrooms.
  5. explore the changing role of instructors and students in the online classroom.
  6. create online learning activities appropriate to their discipline.
  7. upload web-based learning activities for a selected course in their discipline.
  8. develop procedures for assessing online learning outcomes and for evaluating course effectiveness.
