researcher. Overview of Chapter 2:
Comprehending the Research Process. The purpose of Chapter 2 is
to provide you with some basic groundwork for
dealing with the remainder of the text. There are
two main parts to this chapter: The first part introduces
research terminology that recurs throughout the
text. A firm grounding in basic research terms
should facilitate your ability to grasp more
complex methodologic concepts later in the book,
and to begin to read research reports. The text
distinguishes the basic terminology used by
qualitative and quantitative
researchers--for example, subject versus
informant. A chart summarizing differences
in terminology is included. The second part of the
chapter provides an overview of the steps that a
researcher undertakes in conducting a study.

general progression of activities in qualitative
