Introducing the Reverend Mark Stanger
I am on the staff of Grace Cathedral (Episcopal
Church) in San Francisco. My duties there are
varied: pastoral counseling, preaching, teaching,
preparing couples for marriage, visiting the sick,
officiating at weddings and funerals and regular
worship services. This work brings me into contact
with a wide variety of life experiences. Before
that, I worked for nine years at Kaiser Permanente
Medical Center in a non-religious capacity, first
administering financial and disability benefits for
persons with HIV disease and later in general
customer service, specializing in formal grievances
against the health plan. In the past, I was a
member of St. John's Abbey, the Roman Catholic
Benedictine monastery in Minnesota which
administers St. John's University, a liberal arts
college. (That's where my orbit collided with Tom
Nolan's!). There I taught religious subjects,
including ethics.
Part of my training and my current practice in
the Episcopal Church revolves around "loving the
questions" rather than supplying the answers.
That's why teaching and interacting with students
is so stimulating and rich for me.
I live in San Francisco with my life partner,
artist Mark Johnson, and our two whippets, Prisca
and Harry. This is my second year as a discussion
facilitator with the Sonoma State Nursing Dept.
online learning program.
