Unit 3: Problems in Practice That May Be Inconspicuous (Weeks 4, 5 & 6; 18 Feb-10 Mar)

  • "Problems that may be inconspicuous," such as inappropriate requests for treatments and tests (e.g., when a patient requests antibiotics for a viral illness), inappropriate requests for medical exemptions and privileges (e.g., a request for a "disabled" license plate for the sake of convenience rather than for a true disability); also the ethical issues related to alternative medicine, compliance and adherence, preventive medicine, genetic testing...

Option One:

  • Each individual student: Use the Web to search for an article on at least two different bioethical problems in primary care practice that may be "inconspicuous" (i.e., at least 2 articles).
  • Evaluate these articles for validity, reliability, credibility, applicability.
Reveiw the thinking process for evaluateing web pages: http://www.virtualsalt.com/evalu8it.htm
  • Use the correct Forum 03 (A, B, or C, according to your discussion group above) in Nurs 505A or Nurs 505B to summarize each article in a separate entry.
    • Include evaluative comments about the article.
    • What is the relevance of the article to primary care practice?
    • Pose a good question that will stimulate discussion at the end of each entry.

Just for fun: Go to MedEthEx Online and play with some of their cases in interactive video. A great example of how a simulated interview works online, and some good cases: http://griffin.auhs.edu/dept/medethic/cases.html

  • During Week 5 (25 Feb-3 March)
Continue to challenge the discussions about postings by others in your group--whether it is about web articles or the case study. Remember to pace yourself so that you're posting as much as possible on three different
days each week. It's ok to check out the other groups' forums (Forums 03-A, 03-B or 03-C) and dive in to the discussion if it appeals to your ethical judgement!
  • During Week 6 (4-10 March):
    • Continue the discussion with each other about what each of you posted in your group for Unit 3--whether you chose Option One or Option Two. "Discussion" means to have multiple exchanges with each other, just as you would have in a face-to-face in-class discussion. During this kind of discussion, ideas evolve, perspectives change--or sharpen (maybe!), and learning occurs (hopefully).

  • At end of Week 6 (10 Mar):
