Unit 6: Group Project (Weeks 13 & 14; 29 Apr-12 May)

Assignment:

Group Project (everyone in the work group gets the same grade on the project). Use the workroom assigned to your work group as a place to prepare this project. Your workroom is accessible only to members of your work group (and to the instructor and TAs).

At completion of your project, refer to these lists as you evaluate the overall contribution to the project of each person in your work group --including your own contribution.

  • Each work group interviews at least one primary care provider who is in active clinical practice, preferably an FNP.

In your interview/discussion with this provider, ask for a good example of an ethical problem they may have encountered that was "related to systems of care." Use your interviewing skill to prompt them. Get as much detail as you can from the interview so that you can develop a case to present to the class. While interviewing this FNP, remember that you are getting only one person's perspective on the problem. Can you find out how other interested--and disinterested--parties (witnesses?) saw the problem?

Click here for a worksheet to use in gathering information.

Do you feel that these questions are hard to answer? Why?

  • Use Forum 06-A in Nurs 505A or Nurs 505B to post your case study based on the data from your interview by the end of Week 13 (5 May). Your study should include
    • the facts of the ethical problem
    • the assigned duties and moral responsibilities of the participants
    • cultural, organizational and legal constraints on possible solutions
    • the case narrative
    • cite appropriate literature to help you explain, analyze, and solve the problem
    • the case analysis

The analysis is your explanation of the problem.

      • If you were reporting this problem to another professional, how would you summarize it and explain or interpet its parts?
      • What sense or meaning do you make of the problem, based on the facts, the assigned duties of the participants, the culture, and all of the other information that has been gathered about the case?
      • What conclusions do you draw about the case?

Based on your analysis, i.e., your explanation and interpretation of the case, your group will then be able to develop a solution that leads to some resolution of the problem, and give a rationale for why they chose their solution.

    • explain your solution for this problem (i.e., what solution makes the most sense and why?)
    • pose questions for your classmates to discuss.

You'll need to take into account how the problem is defined, the facts, the stakeholders, values, benefit/burden ratio, alternatives, analogous cases, literature/resources, parties involved in decision-making, context, laws and policies, and your own comfort.

  • During Week 14 (6-12 May), read and discuss the case studies of your classmates; pose questions; respond to each other's questions.

At conclusion of this project, submit a peer/self evaluation to me via email in Nurs 505A or Nurs 505B:

Distribute 100 points among the 7 (or 8) members of your work group including yourself. For example, let's say 1 person in your work group earned 20 points, 4 people earned 15 points each, and 2 earned 10 each--making a total of 100 points. Use the following criteria:
  • cooperation with others
  • timeliness of work
  • quality of contribution
  • quantity of contribution

Write a short rationale for the way you distributed points to each member. This assessment and your discussion in this unit will form the basis for your participation grade.

Finally, use Forum 6-B in Nurs 505A or Nurs 505B to post an individual evaluation of this project:

  • What did you learn about ethical problems in clinical practice?
  • What did you learn about working in groups? What went well? What did not? What would you do differently?
  • How could this assignment be improved?
