Chapter 8 examines the study of mathematics with students who have learning and behavior problems. Topics include measurement, time, verbal math problem solving, and computational skill development. Consideration is also given to the revised National Council for Teaching Mathematics standards and an interpretation for students with disabilities (how do we figure out what standards are essential understanding vs. things that are good to know when we are working with students who have learning challenges).

Read Chapter 8. Use the following questions to guide your reading and find meaning in this chapter:

  • List the factors that influence mathematics ability in all people.

  • Identify characteristics of students with learning disabilities that frequently interfere with the mastery of mathematics.

  • Describe teaching perspectives to consider when planning mathematics instruction for students with learning disabilities and for those with emotional and/or behavior problems.

  • Describe teaching and understanding of the prenumber skills, numeration, and place value.

  • Explain how to teach the basic facts--addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

  • Discuss why calculators are a "must" for students with learning disabilities.

  • Explain why overlearning fractions and measurements at the concrete stage is critical to students’ mastery of these skills.

  • Describe how to help students with learning disabilities overcome difficulties with traditional written story problems.

  • Summarize cognitive and operant approaches to increasing math performance.

  • Summarize the importance of teaching students with learning and behavior problems mathematics skills necessary to operate in the "real world."

  • Outline curriculum and materials that focus on the needs of students with learning disabilities.
