  Participate in an online experiment

The purpose of this exercise is to generate the data needed for an in-class discussion of internet-based experiments.

Please go to the "PsychExps" home page: http://psychexps.olemiss.edu.

Next, you will need to download the Authorware web player. For instructions as to how do that, click on the link titled "What you need": http://psychexps.olemiss.edu/need.htm. The program works best if you use Netscape Navigator or Modzilla from a PC (as opposed to a MAC).

Once the webplayer is successfully loaded, please select "Participate in Experiments" and then select "Lab Experiments": http://psychexps.olemiss.edu/Exps/labexperiments.htm. From the list, please select the experiment titled "Perception of Gender": http://psychexps.olemiss.edu/Exps/Perception_of_Gender/startgr.htm.

You will be assigned a "license plate" number, please write it down (I will ask you to turn in it in to me). You can complete the experiment as an "interested person".

If you complete the experiment, but can not submit the data, please let me know. There should be an opportunity to "review your data". You might want to copy and paste the presented data into another document. Even if you complete the experiment but can not submit the data, it still will help you understand the experiment when we discuss it in class.

If you can not download the authorware web player or this particular experiment, please try a "test" from either one of the following websites:

http://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/
http://www.tolerance.org/hidden_bias/index.html

Please be prepared to describe the test that you tried. Whether you complete the perception of gender study or an "implicit" test, please write a few notes about your experience (or questions that occurred to you) as you complete the tasks. (Did they ask for informed consent? Any "demand" characteristics? Were you "debriefed"? What were the independent and dependent variables?) Your experiences will form the basis for our class discussion.
