Class will meet Wed, 8:00 to 11:40 am in Stevenson 3095.

Course Goal:

Upon completing this course, students should be able to evaluate and apply current psychological theory and research to understanding current intergroup conflicts and public policy issues.

Course Objectives:

  • Describe psychological theories and research relevant to social justice and intergroup conflict.
  • Understand why justice considerations shape human behavior.
  • Apply justice and intergroup theories to understanding ordinary behavior.
  • Critically evaluate research findings designed to test psychological models of social justice.

This course also is designed to contribute to the following Psychology Department learning objectives:

  • Students should be able to apply psychological theories and concepts to problems and questions they find personally important.
  • Students should be able to demonstrate knowledge of differences and similarities in the way that people are treated due to gender, race, ethnicity, culture, class, disabilities and sexual orientation.
  • Students should be able to demonstrate the capacity to reflect on one's cultural identity (and an awareness of how implicit cultural assumptions color our behavior).

Course Readings:

As listed on the course schedule, course readings include selected chapters from Tyler, Boeckmann, Smith & Huo (1997) and Whitley & Kite (2006), empirical journal and newspaper articles. These readings will be on reserve in the library. "Current Events" articles will be added to the reading list during the semester (they will be linked to the website reading list).
