Class Participation 

Because this is an advanced psychology seminar, I expect active class participation.  Your well-considered contributions will benefit you, your fellow students and me.  Therefore, your thoughtful comments and questions about the assigned reading are an important aspect of assessment.  Active participation will help you learn the material and earn better marks on the course assignments.  I will look for (1) evidence that you completed readings and class assignments (e.g., “well-considered” and “thoughtful” comments during class discussion), (2) the extent and frequency with which you participate and (3) regular attendance (e.g., fewer than three absences).  Given the sensitive nature of some course topics, I request that you respect other students’ perspectives and experiences during discussions. I will endeavor to do the same.

Also, please refrain from engaging in behaviors that are disrespectful and distracting to me and your peers.  These behaviors include (but are not limited to): text messaging, using cell phones, reading newspapers, checking email, surfing the internet, sleeping, arriving late or leaving early. I will consider attendance, punctuality, behavior (the degree to which responsibilities are carried out in a professional manner), and class participation when deciding whether to tip a borderline grade one way or another
