1. If you have not done so yet, complete the
questionnaire (to download: click here).
Return it to the instructor in class. (SA#1)
2. What are your goals in coming to college? Answer
this question by sending a message to the class email
list with the subject heading "Why YOUR NAME choose to go
to college." Go into detail here. Send by deadline
noon today. (BB#1) [Although not strictly an
assignment on the Bulletin Boards (Discussion Forums) on
WebCT, this still counts as such.]

3. When studying the reading assignments make notes in
your Journal using the instructions for Close
Reading a Text.
4. Make sure you bring your one page "entry
ticket" with an in-depth discussion of an aspect the

Format."

1. Do from the "Mindful Body" exercises we discussed last week (for a description of these exercises see here)
Exercise 1: Atmosphere as a Human Commons
and report on them in your Journal. Place it also on the Bulletin Board (WebCT) in the Discussion Forum "Mindful Body 1." (BB#2)
2. When studying the reading assignments make notes in your Journal using the instructions for Close Reading a Text. Make sure to list all the passages in the reading you don't understand completely or have other questions about.
3. Read these newspaper stories on Heat Deaths in France: click here and here. Then read the reponses at

4. Make sure you bring your "entry ticket" with a comment about the readings to class today. Typed out, at least one page.
5. Discuss on WebCT, Discussion Forums, pp. 1 - 63 of Gottlieb's "The GALILEO Syndrome" in the discussion group you have been assigned to (for your group see the class list on WebCT.).
Discuss at least these questions: Discuss any passages you don't completely get. Discuss the emotional response of the protagonists. Introduce a quotation that you find striking and discuss it. Why does the book start off at a high school? Doe you find this an effective starting point? What political positions do the different protagonists occupy? [Respond to each others contributions.]

2. When studying the reading assignments make notes in your Journal using the instructions for Close Reading a Text. Make sure to list all the passages in the reading you don't understand completely or have other questions about.
3. Esp. if you are behind schedule, continue discussion, in your WebCT book group, of the novel, upto about page 200.
4. Respond to two entry tickets of other students from last week that they posted on WebCT, by replying on WebCT.
5. Read all the contributions to the WebCT Discussion Forum "Mindful Body 1." Choose one that differs is some significant way from your own experience and, in a "Reply," explain the difference. Then describe what you would need to do to get the experience that that person had OR what that person needs to do to get your experience.

3. Write an entry ticket with a review of the movie The Day After Tomorrow that we viewed in class last week, written for a popular science magazine, in which you focus on the scientific plausibility of what happens in the movie and the claims made in the movie.
