BCGF B cell growth factor.

bursa of Fabricius Primary lymphoid organ; site of education and maturation of B cells in birds; Bone marrow is the equivalent in mammals.

CD4 Marker specific for Th and Tdth cells.

CD8 Marker specific for Ts and CTL cells.

interleukin-1 (IL-1) A lymphokine produced by monocytes and other specific cells which affect T and B cells; important in cell activation and inflammation. [See text for list of other interleukins.]

lymphokines See table in text for summary of important players; important in intercellular communication.

MALT Mucus associated lymphoid tissue.

post capillary venule (PCV) A region of blood vessels in the lymph node which may contain HEV, allowing lymphocytes to pass through.

stem cells Primary bone marrow cells giving rise to more differentiated cell types.

thoracic duct Final lymphatic collecting vessel which empties into the left subclavian vein.

Thy-1 Mouse pan-T cell marker; human CD2 is equivalent.

thymus Primary lymphoid organ responsible for the education and maturation of T cells.

TRF T cell replacing factor.
