April 18, 2008.

Tuesday, April 15 (6:00 PM - 7:30 PM) or Saturday, April 19 (10:30 AM - 12:00 PM) ). $10 (one and a half hours each; includes handouts; each conference is offered twice). IMPORTANT! April 23 & May 8, 2008. MANAGING YOUR LIFE GOALS OVER TWO CONTINENTS. April Financial Workshop. 6:30pm - Location: ISTP/Palo Alto. Many French residents of the Silicon Valley have accumulated assets over the years (or will) through retirement plans and personal investments of various types. Their estate has grown on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. Many want to stay 6 months in California (preferably in the winter) and 6 months in France. Some want to return to France and invoke the cost of US health care as an important reason for the move. Finally, others want to stay here for retirement, because their family lives here. Most are US permanent residents or have become US citizens. Being of dual citizenship/residence adds a degree of complexity in fulfilling one’s life goals. Adapting one’s resources accordingly requires careful planning. This workshop titled: “Managing your life goals over two continents” will discuss Planning and will consist of two sessions. In session #1, we will discuss goal setting and resource planning. Topics will cover but will not be limited to: financial planning, investment planning, retirement planning, French/US Treaties (Social Security, Tax…) and tax planning (stock options and Alternative Minimum Tax, Global income declaration, Expatriation Tax provisions (IRC section 877)). I will share the presentation with Ms Montaine Farbos, Tax Consultant and Partner at Jade Associates (http://www.jade-associates.com/) … Session #2 (May 08) will discuss Estate planning implications of staying in California or moving back to France. May 2, 2008. FEMMES IMPRESSIONNISTES: BERTHE MORISOT, MARY CASSATT, EVA GONZALES.

May 31 & June 1, 7 & 8, 2008. Gunn High School, Palo Alto.

Through May 3, 2008. FRANCK-ANDRE JAMME: NEW EXERCISES at the Meridian Gallery. The exhibition comprises a selection of small mirrors inscribed with short texts by one of France’s leading contemporary poets. The idiosyncratically unbroken texts as well as the disorienting interaction of text and mirror in these works stimulate the reader/viewer’s mind, fostering a condition of unusual concentration. Each text is a kind of philosophical instruction or “exercise”; like modern koans they exude qualities of impossibility, ephemeralness, and paradox. Dhy?na: Contemporary anonymous Tantric drawings from Rajasthan. The Tantric drawings shown here—which are from the collection of poet Franck André Jamme—were made anonymously as an aid to meditative practice. The forms and colors in these works are not unique but rather highly conventional signs that have evolved for over a thousand years both to signify and to stimulate specifi c mental and spiritual experiences. Dhy?na is a Sanskrit word for deep meditation and as such could be used to describe not only this exhibition but the two concurrent shows as well. It has always something to do with new life : imaginary plants that are flourishing, blossoms, seeds. It seems that nature is new and beautiful like new-born babies. She took abstract pictures of fruits and vegetables (a very poetic book, "Semence", is still available), she made paintings on trees and imaginary plants, and many others. You can see her work either in the SFMOMA gallery at Fort Mason, or in her atelier (756 Garland drive in Palo Alto), or else on her website : http://www.florencedebretagne.com

August 2008. SPANISH 1 IN FRENCH, FOR STUDENTS OF FRENCH. The SRJC Dept. of Modern and Classical Langugages is delighted to announce a new course: Spanish 1 in French! That's right. Next fall (beginning in August), you will have the opportunity to learn Elementary Spanish at SRJC in a French-language classroom. This course is designed for those of you who have attained an advanced-intermediate level of French (meaning you've completed two years of French) and now are excited at the idea of using your French as you begin to learn Spanish. The elementary Spanish book used in the class is published in France for French learners of Spanish. The language of the classroom (when it isn't Spanish) will be French. Spanish 1 in French will be taught by an instructor who is fluent in and experienced at teaching both languages. This is a unique opportunity. Indeed, I don't think many of my colleagues really believe that there are enough students out there to fill this class, but I know you, the wonderful students who have come through our French classes. June 4, 5, & 7, 2008. LE POEME HARMONIQUE, a French ensemble, performs works from Venice: VENEZIA DELLE STRADE AI PALAZZI. With Vincent Dumestre, Claire LeFilliâtre, Jan van Elsacker, Serge Goubioud, Arnaud Marzorati, Mira Glodeanu, Lucas Guimaraes, Françoise Enock, Joël Grare, Jean-Luc Tamby & Benjamin Lazar. Cal Performances presents the world premiere of Le Poème Harmonique's Venezia delle strade ai Palazzi, featuring the music of Claudio Monteverdi and Francesco Manelli. Founded by Vincent Dumestre to promote the authenticity and eloquence of the works of innovative 17th-century composers, the French ensemble made its critically acclaimed West Coast debut at the 2006 Berkeley Festival and Exhibition in Baroque Carnival, a piece that was—like this year's contribution—part concert, part theater and "inventive and charming to witness" (San Francisco Chronicle). The company of superb musicians, led by Dumestre on theorbo and baroque guitar, return to perform this new theatrical event that includes special lighting, costumes, and Baroque gestures to evoke the spirit of Venice at a time when art music and popular forms mixed, creating artistic freedom of a new order. The program includes Claire Lefilliâtre's much-admired rendition of Monteverdi's Lamento della Ninfa; music by Manelli, who introduced Venice to opera; canzonettes, bergamasques; and the many facets of an art that was constantly evolving. Cal Performances, Zellerbach Hall, UC-Berkeley. $62. 8pm. http://bfx.berkeley.edu for details.
