November 5, 2010. SOPHIS & KALBASS KREYOL and THE DUNES plus NAIMA SHALHOUB play a Benefit Concert for Pakistan. Bay Area world musicians Sophis & Kalbass Kreyol, the Dunes, and Naima Shalhoub come together in a Night of Music for Hope to help provide relief for the nearly 20 million Pakistani children, women, and men who have been severely impacted by the worst flood of 2010. Net proceeds will go to organizations that are working directly with the victims. Join us for this amazing benefit concert! Led by Haitian-born Sophis, Kalbass Kreyol is a high-energy band known for its electrifying and uplifting live performances. Its members embody the spirit of its music - eclectic and unique, with the essence of Haiti at its core. Since its start in 2005 the band has featured musicians from Haiti, China, the Congo, Puerto Rico, Iran, Trinidad, and the U.S. As a songwriter, Sophis crafts music designed to give listeners hope, inspiration, and awareness. At the center of his sound are elements of Haitian kompa and rara, which are mélanged with merengue, reggae, salsa, zouk, rock, and funk to create an unusual rhythmic cocktail that keeps audiences asking for more. The band has staged and/or participated in nine benefit concerts that raised $15,000 for Haitian earthquake relief. Sophis is still lending his voice and music to various local fundraising projects for Haiti in the Bay Area as a solo artist. Formed in 2002, the Dunes is a North African fusion group. That is, it is a Chaabi funk Gnawa rock Berber metal Arab reggae groove machine. Singing in Arabic, Amazigh, French and English, the Dunes mix original compositions with Moroccan, Algerian and Tunisian favorites and rarities. Songs of love and life, exile and hope, faith and transformation come alive in the Dunes' slamming live set to get dancers dancing, thinkers thinking, and groovers grooving. The five-piece group augments a basic rock band ensemble with the Algerian mandol, Moroccan Gnawa guinbri, and various North African percussion instruments. The bandmembers hail from North Africa and Northern California: singer and mandol player Karim Amrani, singer and guitarist Reda Bouali (formerly of Rascass, the first Algerian metal band), singer-keyboardist Anis Sehiri, bassist-percussionist-singer Tim Abdellah Fuson (who wrote the first doctoral dissertation on Gnawa music), and drummer Nasser Addi. Singer Naima Shalhoub writes lyrics that speak of her life straddling cultural and national borders. Shalhoub is an Arab-American, born in the United States with familial roots in Lebanon and Sierra Leone. She sings music to inspire change, freedom, and love. Her songs draw on Middle Eastern and jazz traditions. Doors at 8:30 p.m.; Show at 9:00 p.m. $10-$20 sliding scale http://www.ashkenaz.com
November 5 & 7, 2010. HENRI-GEORGES CLOUZOT’S INFERNO. Friday, November 5 at 7:00 and Sunday, November 7 at 4:00. In 1963, French master Henri-Georges Clouzot (WAGES OF FEAR, DIABOLIQUE) embarked on the most ambitious project of his career, a nightmarish account of an obsessed husband. But the real nightmare came with the actual filming of INFERNO, as Clouzot pushed to destructive ends his notorious tendency to test the stamina of cast and crew. With an unlimited budget and no scheduled date for completion, production came to a halt after a star stormed off the set after three weeks of grueling and inconclusive shooting. 185 cans of film negative were uncovered almost half a century later, thus offering directors Serge Bromberg and Ruxandra Medrea a chance to share a radiant Romy Schneider in the co-starring role and—more importantly—offering a glimpse into the depths of Clouzot’s genius. November 11, 2010. "LE JUIF AU ROYAUME DE FRANCE (I): JUDAS ET LE PEUPLE DÉICIDE by RENEE MOREL. It is in Gaul, with a few families settling in small towns near the Mediterranean, that the history of the Jews in France begins. In the Middle Ages, the Jewish population is remarkably integrated —winemakers, peasants, merchants, doctors: they are found in every occupation (even a Jewish ambassador at the court of Charlemagne). A rich and open Jewish culture flourishes, with philosophers, astronomers, and commentators of the Bible. But, at the time of the crusades, Christians paint a new picture of the Jews, branding them the “deicide people” —the killers of Christ. They become identified with the treacherous figure of Judas, omnipresent in religious art (a warning for the faithful). Soon locked in a true “occupational ghetto” —money-lending— the Jews are needed, yet abhorred: Christians start accusing them of all the crimes. Louis IX —later canonized as Saint Louis— forced the Jewish population to wear a yellow badge (*rouelle*). Finally, in 1394, king Charles VI put an end to a thousand years of Jewish life in the kingdom of France by expelling the members of their communities. A slide presentation by CCSF instructor Renée Morel IN FRENCH, followed by a discussion. Free and open to all. Open seating (first come, first served). November 18, 2010.

April 7–May 1, 2011. THE VIRTUAL STAGE & ELECTRIC COMPANY THEATRES PRODUCTION of NO EXIT, by JEAN-PAUL SARTRE. Adapted from the French by Paul Bowles. Conceived and directed by Kim Collier. U.S. Premiere. Fresh from sold-out performances across Canada, Jean-Paul Sartre's redefined classic makes its U.S. debut at A.C.T. A mysterious valet ushers three people into a shabby hotel room, and they soon discover that hell isn't fire and brimstone at all—it's other people arguing about their lives. Sartre's 1944 existential classic, skillfully reimagined through the perspective of a series of hidden cameras, turns the stage into a cinema, and the audience into voyeurs, as a thrillingly staged "live film" takes place before your eyes. A.C.T. continues its tradition of welcoming the work of innovative international artists to the Bay Area with this riveting multimedia event. 415.749.2250 or http://www.act-sf.org for details.
