French 15, 2013.  LES AMIS DE LA CULTURE FRANÇAISE offer a presentation on UNE BREVE HISTOIRE DE L'OMBRE by RENEE MOREL. The program for the evening starts at 5:30 PM with refreshments (wine, soft drinks, amuse-bouches). Free after the entrance fee.   The conference will start at 6:00 PM and last just under an hour. People who are interested can then join la conférencière and her shadow for dinner in a Berkeley restaurant. Reservation necessary. St. John’s Presbyterian Church, 2727 College Ave., Berkeley.  6pm.  $10.

Co-written by Jacques Prévert and boasting sumptuous production design by Alexandre Trauner, REMORQUES projects a striking vision of a world where nature suffuses human activity and lends a lingering lyricism to such ordinary events as a walk along the beach or in the country. "It remains an outstanding film and one of Grémillon's best."— Bertrand Tavernier (1941, 84 min., in French w/English subtitles)  Sonoma Film Institute.  7pm 2/15 and 4pm 2/17.  http://www.sonoma.edu/sfi/

February 16, 2013.  SAMBA NGO plays African - Congolese music at Ashkenaz.  Once a mainstay at Ashkenaz, the charismatic Congolese singer-guitarist Samba Ngo returns for the first time in close to a year, bringing the same qualities that  made him such a favorite, as he leads his band through a steamy, hot, and happy  African-rock-funk-jazz fusion of soukous dance music. Everyone leaves feeling uplifted. As Ngo says, "The music of the African tradition is therapeutic. My music is part of that. Music is not only to listen to and like, but to enjoy the spirit of."  Ngo is a master of sebene, the characteristic element of Congolese music that enchants and entrances listeners with driving layers of guitar and call-and-response choruses. Over the irresistible guitars and percussion, Ngo's voice is filled with hope, love, and peace through music. Raised in a tiny Congo village, Ngo was the son of an herb doctor (nganga) who taught him the rhythm used for healing rituals. Since leaving home to play music at the age of 13, Ngo has taken his father's teachings to heart and used his music as a healing force. He sings in French, Lingala and Kikongo,  and occasionally in English. In addition to electric guitar he plays drums, bottles, and the likembe, Congo's thumb piano. His recent CD, "The Best of Samba Ngo," is  a thirty-year retrospective of his music, spanning from his Afropop group Mbamina to his many solo CDs. In addition to longtime favorites, tonight's concert also  includes songs recorded for Ngo's next album, due for release later this year. Now living in Santa Cruz, Ngo has been busy in Paris finishing the CD, when not touring in Africa and Europe. Last summer he even took his music to the Montana Folk Festival in Butte.  "Besides being an inspired songwriter, Samba Ngo delivers his songs in a softly  seductive voice that convinces the listener that everything is going to work out," says Larry Kelp, host of KPFA's weekly radio show Sing Out. "His music just feels so right, so full of love and compassion."  Doors at 9:00 pm; Show at 9:30 pm  $13/$10 students  www.ashkenaz.com for details.

February 19, 2013.  DWIGHT "BLACK CAT" CARRIER play Cajun/Zydeco  at Ashkenaz. Louisiana native Dwight "Black Cat" Carrier  returns to our stage in a hot night of Cajun-zydeco dance music. Bandleader, accordion player, and singer Carrier comes from a long line of distinguished musicians (he's the nephew of Roy Carrier and cousin of Troy "Dikki Du" and Chubby Carrier, to name just a few), a family where zydeco music was a pastime for holidays and family gatherings. He embodies both tradition and a unique style that is infused with his blues and  R&B influences.  Growing up in Church Point, Louisiana, in the time when rap music was gaining popularity, Carrier's friends would laugh when he and his brother Joseph practiced their zydeco music. In 1988, his first band, Dwight Carrier and Zydeco Rockers was created, with Dwight playing accordion and Joseph on drums. When he was just 14, Dwight released his first album entitled "My Baby Left Me," which earned him local status. In 1991 Dwight was asked to join the Creole Zydeco Snap Band, headed by Creole and blues  musician Warren Ceasar. Dwight became the group's accordionist and traveled extensively around the world for several years, including multiple appearances at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. After a break from music, Carrier returned to the family business of zydeco in 2008, forming his band Black Cat and the Zydeco Ro Doggs.  They have taken their pumping style of music to both coasts and the Midwest as well as throughout Louisiana.  Doors at 7:30 pm; Cajun/Zydeco dance lesson with Cheryl McBride at 8:00 pm; Show  at 8:30 pm $10   www.ashkenaz.com

February 22, 2013.  LUMIERE D’ETE.  Another masterpiece by Jean Grémillon. With its complex script by Jacques Prévert, LUMIERE D'ETE stands alongside CHILDREN OF PARADISE as the high point of French cinema during the German Occupation. "Suppressed by the Vichy regime for 'counterproductive' attitudes and its lightly veiled attack on Vichy values — Grémillon's influential masterwork has often been compared to THE RULES OF THE GAME. Like Renoir's masterpiece, LUMIERE D'ETE focuses on the uneasy relationship between two classes in an isolated location: a group of corrupt rich people, including an imperious lord, an opera singer, an alcoholic painter and his girlfriend, who are sequestered in a chateau on the edge of a precipice; and a group of workers who are building a dam in the valley below. At a lavish costume ball, the class tensions explode." – Toronto International Film Festival With Paul Bernard, Pierre Brasseur, and Madeleine Renaud. February 22, 2013.  MALIMA KONE ET LES HARMONIES and LENI STERN AFRICAN TRIO perform at Ashkenaz.  Two bands with musical roots in West Africa share the Ashkenaz stage in a night  of exciting tradition and new directions. Malima Kone comes from Burkina Faso (adjacent to Mali), and jazz-guitarist Leni Stern's band comes from Senegal, while her latest music is tied to Mali.  Burkina Faso singer and multi-instrumentalist Malima Kone has taken his family's centuries-old heritage to the world, updating it with his  own style that includes traditional African roots and acoustic reggae. Malima Kone sings in five languages - Bwamu, Bamana/Jula, Moore, French, and English - and bases his lyrics on life experiences from childhood and as he sees the world today. He  sings of orphans, children of the street, family, freedom, poverty, justice, world peace, and love.  Born in 1984, Malima Kone was surrounded by the music and history of the Kone family, and by the age of 3 was beginning to learn to play the 21-stringed harp, the kora. It is the accompanying instrument of the jeli, the family and village historian  who sings the centuries-long story and culture, the song and dance of his people. At age 12, Malima joined the youth ensemble Maison des Jeunes du Burkina that toured throughout Africa and Europe. He was writing his own songs by the time he followed other siblings to America in 2002, settling in Santa Cruz. He and sister Mandjou  taught music and dance at UC Santa Cruz, the University of Oregon, UC Berkeley,  and UCLA. Malima began his solo music career in 2006. He then created an acoustic reggae group called Reggafrique in Santa Cruz, currently performing throughout California. He continues to travel back home to his roots in Africa, finding inspiration while visiting family and friends. He is working on his first album.  Leni Stern's African Trio features her on electric guitar, voice, and n'goni (Malian lute), with electric bassist Mamadou Ba and Alioune Fave on djembe (drum), sabar, and backing vocals. The band plays an array of music that includes her compositions from the  2012 CD "Smoke, No Fire." The album was recorded in Mali's capital, Bamako, and  its music reflects the time and political upheaval Mali is undergoing, from relaxed start to tense completion of recording. Stern's music has always been filled with an exciting sense of discovery, a feeling that the next solo will take her and listeners into unexplored territory.  Born in Germany, Stern came to the U.S. to study at Berklee College of Music, then moved to her current home in New York and embarked on an international career. She has collaborated with an array of world musicians, from former Miles Davis guitarist Mike Stern (her husband) to Bill Frisell, Salif Keita, and current jazz star Esperanza Spalding. In recent years her interaction with African musicians has led to wider acclaim; she recently completed an American tour with the Acoustic Africa 3. She  has also won the Gibson Guitar Female Guitarist award five consecutive years. According to the Washington Post, "Stern doesn't collaborate with the West Africans so much as commune with them; she never sounds out of her element, even when her pop and  jazz sensibilities are most apparent."  Doors at 8:30 pm; Show at 9:00 pm $13/$10 advance & students.    www.ashkenaz.com

(1943, 112 min., in French w/English subtitles)Sonoma Film Institute.  7pm.  http://www.sonoma.edu/sfi/ February 22, 2013.

REMORQUES.  Iconic French star Jean Gabin plays a tugboat captain working the storm-battered coast of Brittany. After a harrowing rescue, he falls into a passionate affair with the enigmatic Michèle Morgan in this classic from this neglected French master Jean Grémillon (LE CIEL EST A VOUS (SFI 2012). 7pm 2/15 and 4pm 2/17.  http://www.sonoma.edu/sfi/ February 15 & 17, 2013.

ART

Through February 16, 2012.  CLAIRE FONTAINE – REDEMPTIONS.  Claire Fontaine is a Paris-based collective artist, founded in 2004. After lifting her name from a popular brand of school notebooks, Claire Fontaine declared herself a "readymade artist" and began to elaborate a version of neo-conceptual art that often looks like other people's work. Working in neon, video, sculpture, painting and text, her practice can be described as an ongoing interrogation of the political impotence and the crisis of singularity that seem to define contemporary art today.  CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, Kent and Vicki Logan Gallery, 360 Kansas Street, SF.

Through February 16, 2013.  AWAITING THE ARRIVAL OF DAWN.  The exhibition is the result of a work with Bay Area residents representative of the Latino cultural diversity. It addresses the question of community while nurturing the talent of non-professional participants.  Discussion with Moise Touré February 6th - 6pm.  Mission Cultural Center for the Latino Arts - San Francisco

Through February 28, 2013.  COLORFUL LANDSCAPES.  Works by Geneva-born Swiss-Mexican painter XAVIER CASTELLANOS. Geneva-born Swiss-Mexican painter Xavier Castellanos is currently exhibiting a new solo show, appropriately entitled Colorful Landscapes, in the mezzanine gallery space at 456 Montgomery Space in San Francisco. Xavier will be present to discuss his works on January 17. Please RSVP to xavierca@yahoo.com to be put on the guest list or arrange a viewing.  456 Montgomery Street, San Francisco.

Through March 17, 2012.  ROYAL TREASURES FROM THE LOUVRE:  LOUIS XIV TO MARIE-ANTOINETTE.  Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco presents an unparalleled collection of decorative arts from the Musée du Louvre, Paris, including some of the most exquisite treasures of the French monarchy from the time of Louis XIV until the Revolution of 1789. Royal Treasures from the Louvre: From Louis XIV to Marie-Antoinette is the story of French royal patronage, and the showcased objects in the exhibition are nothing less than dazzling:  the Gobelins manufactory’s masterwork mosaic tabletop of semiprecious stones; the gemmes de la couronne, precious hard stone vases collected by Louis XIV; the presents du Roi, diamond-and-gem snuffboxes made for the royal family to present as gifts; personal items made for Louis XV’s private use, or for use by his mistresses, Madame de Pompadour and Madame du Barry, including exquisite Sèvres porcelain and silver; and Marie-Antoinette’s personal collection of precious vases made of agate and other hard stones.  Many of the objects in the exhibition have never been shown in the United States and indeed, several have never left France. Royal Treasures from the Louvre: From Louis XIV to Marie-Antoinette Is an unparalleled collection of decorative objects from France’s most illustrious royalty, direct from the Musée du Louvre, and displayed for the first time in the United States in this exclusive presentation.  Premiere & black-tie dinner, November 14.  Opening reception for donors at the Friend level, November 15; Members-only preview hours, November 16; Opening reception, November 16.  http://legionofhonor.famsf.org/legion/exhibitions/royal-treasures-louvre-louis-xiv-marie-antoinette

Through March 23, 2013.  PAINTINGS BY DRISS OUADAH.  In Fences IV, Algerian artist Driss Ouadahi depicts a hazy sky with pink-tinted clouds behind the delicate geometry of a fence. Sounds picturesque, right? But the chain-links expand to the borders of the canvas, trapping and disorienting the viewer. In "Trans-Location," the artist's latest show largely comprised of cityscape paintings, Ouadahi builds on this tension between promise and enclosure. The gridded and abstracted architectural spaces invite the viewer in but ultimately fail to allow them passage or clarity. Viewable from the comparatively accessible architectural space of Hosfelt Gallery, the works enacts an elegant commentary on modernity's failure to deliver its political and social promises. And the paintings look cool too. (Kerry) Hosfelt Gallery 260 Utah, SF (415) 495-5454.  www.hosfeltgallery.com

Through March 23, 2013.  SWISS ARTIST CHRISTIAN MARCLAY shows his work in THE UNPHOTOGRAPHABLE.  Work from Swiss artist Christian Marclay is prominently featured in the prestigious Fraenkel Gallery's The Unphotographable, an ambitious survey exploring the history of that which cannot be photographed. On-going. WHY NOT MAKE IT BEAUTIFUL? FRENCH TRAVEL POSTERS, 1945-1949, presented by the Nevada State Museum. French travel posters given to Nevada in 1949 in gratitude for American support following World War II will make their debut at the Nevada State Museum beginning May 23. Commissioned and printed by the Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français, the French National Railways, the 21 posters depict stunning French landscapes, historical provinces and cultural regions. Why Not Make it Beautiful? French Travel Posters 1945-1949 features artwork carried aboard the Merci Boxcar, or Gratitude Train, in February of 1949. Research indicates that all states received a set of posters, yet only three appear to have retained possession of their collection, and Nevada will be the only state to exhibit them. Staff from the Nevada State Museum and Nevada State Archives restored the posters for the exhibit generously sponsored by Hazel Woodgate and the John and Grace Naumann Foundation. In 1947 the American people collected 700 boxcars loaded with food, clothing and fuel to help the people of France who were struggling desperately to recover from World War II. This "Friendship Train" stopped in Reno to collect the food gathered from all across the state of Nevada. In 1949 the French people collected a trainload of gifts for the Americans, filling 49 boxcars with tokens and treasures from the French provinces, one for each state and one to be shared between Hawaii and Washington D.C. The existence of these trains, and a time when international friendship was on a citizen-to-citizen scale is nearly forgotten. Most Nevadans have little knowledge of this chapter in our history. The notes and the significance of the gifts represent the best of humanity; the kindness that humans can give and share in the face of great suffering, the deep connection possible across cultural and spatial boundaries. Nevada State Museum/Bretzlaff History Resource Center Hours: 8:30 to 4:30 Wed. - Sat. by appointment 775/687-4810, x240 or SueAnn.Monteleone@nevadaculture.org or http://museums.nevadaculture.org/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=431

FLORENCE DE BRETAGNE. Florence de Bretagne is a French painter and photographer. Her work is full of joy and very colorful. It has always something to do with new life : imaginary plants that are flourishing, blossoms, seeds. It seems that nature is new and beautiful like new-born babies. She took abstract pictures of fruits and vegetables (a very poetic book, "Semence", is still available), she made paintings on trees and imaginary plants, and many others. You can see her work either in the SFMOMA gallery at Fort Mason, or in her atelier (756 Garland Drive in Palo Alto), or else on her website : http://www.florencedebretagne.com

CONTEMPORARY LANDSCAPES OF SOUTHERN FRANCE, by ANDREA WEDELL.  Expat Andrea Wedell, originally from the Bay Area and living in France for the past 24 years, would love for you to visit her painting : contemporary landscapes of Southern France. She works with texture and vibrant, bold color that is built up in multiple layers and glazed on. Her landscapes are semi-abstract to abstract poetic interpretations of her environment in Cassis, or bits  and pieces of it as she sees and feels it– from lively, magical gardens with their sweet smells , to turquoise and deep orange underwater scenes, pink and bright white cliffs built up over millions of years, villages that have retained their authentic charm, sparkling ocean and wide expanses of sky. You can see her work virtually on her website :   www.gallerywedell.com If you sign up on the blog, you will receive monthly posts, a journal of art and life in the South of France. www.gallerywedell.com/blog

March 6-April 24, 2013. 8 weeks (March 6 - April 24,  2013). Wednesday mornings (10:30 AM-12:00 NOON). In French.   $255. Discounts for early birds as well as for early birds who also are French Class members. No book to purchase: short texts will be provided. FRENCH PRIMARY CLASS AT THE RENAISSANCE SCHOOL IN OAKLAND. The Renaissance School (TRS), a private Montessori school in Oakland, California for ages 2 years old through middle school, announces it has openings in its French Primary class for children ages four and five years old, born between September 1, 2007 and August 31, 2008.  Students in the French Primary class are introduced to conversational French and are conversed with and instructed at all times in both English and French. Because they are taught by native speakers, children acquire the correct accent and language patterns. The written form of the language is introduced in both languages at this level allowing the children to learn to write and read by the end of that level.  At the Elementary level, students continue to develop their linguistic skills by adding Spanish, bringing to bear a genuine tri-language immersion program. The Renaissance School is believed to be the only Montessori school in the United States that offers a genuine three-language immersion program.  Tours of the school are available by appointment. To schedule a tour of the school, email info@therenaisanceschool.org or call 510-531-8566. Visit:  http://www.therenaissanceschool.org

SANTA ROSA FRENCH-AMERICAN CHARTER SCHOOL.  SRFACS will open in the fall of 2012 for first through fourth grades, and will expand through the eighth grade in the future.  This information is being provided as a courtesy to you. There is no affiliation between SRFACS (Santa Rosa French-American Charter School) and AFSR (Alliance Française de Santa Rosa).  For more information about the Charter School, please contact Nas Salamati:  info@srfacs.org  If interested in sending your children to SRFACS, please sign the SRFACS Petition and send it to:  SRFACS (Santa Rosa French-American Charter School)  2097 Stagecoach Rd, Suite 220  Santa Rosa, CA 95404  US  On Friday the 8th of April 2011, Jacqueline Lindenfeld and I attended an informational meeting about a proposed Santa Rosa French-American Charter School known as SRFACS. This meeting was well attended, and we were impressed by the presenters who are leaders in the community in the fields of education and health/nutrition. Other members are leaders in the fields of communications and engineering. SRFACS will open in the fall of 2012 for first through fourth grades, and will expand through the eighth grade in the future.  Their goal is to offer children a solid education based on high academic standards and exposure to the global world. The dual-immersion French-American Charter School curriculum will employ a formula with a proven track record in private schools, and more recently, in charter schools on the East Coast. This opportunity will now be extended to everyone in our community via a free public charter school.  Any parent interested in having their child enrolled in a charter school focused on academic excellence with an opening to the global world is a parent  SRFACS would love to have. There are no enrollment ‘requirements’ (speaking French for example), and that is one of the great strengths of this school.  SRFACS is currently gathering signatures of parents interested in enrolling their children. You may contact this organization at: info@srfacs.org,  or sign the petition above and mail it in.  Lise Melin  Directrice de l’école @ AFSR.
