April Events

April 18, 2013.  MATHIEU LEHANNEUR speaks at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.   French designer Mathieu Lehanneur bridges problems and solutions with innovative product designs, which are more often informed by science and technology than formal design history.  The objects are not just functional; they perform. Lehanneur addresses 21st-century concerns with an evolved sensibility — responsive noise-mitigating rovers, pods for recuperating lost sleep, a stereo for rekindling passion, meditative blue-sky windows — all built upon the body's natural responses.  Phyllis Wattis Theater, SFMOMA, 7pm.  $10/$7. http://www.sfmoma.org/exhib_events/events/2253 for details.

April 18, 2013.  KARAMO SUSSO plays the kora at Ashkenaz!  One of the best-known African performers to grace our stage, international kora  star Karamo Susso  has appeared in the past few years in numerous settings, contributing his unique  spirit, from solo to such world fusions as the World Blues Band, Symphony of Koras, Soul Union, and the Manding Band. Susso was born in Gambia, raised in Mali, and  is a singer and kora master. He grew up in a compound of griots, next door to Toumani Diabate. His uncle was Ballake Cissoko. Susso was playing kora and performing before he was big enough to hold the instrument. He has since gone on to perform with many of Africa's top stars.  The kora, the 21-stringed harp lute of West Africa, originated in the ancient Kingdom of Mali more than a thousand years ago. Tradition tells that djinns brought it into this world and gave it to the griots: families whose place in the culture was to  sing the epics of heroes and relate histories of their communities. The griots  played kora and sang in court to praise the kings, and in the villages to carry  news and to celebrate traditional ceremonies. The music is intricate, elegant, and potent. It is sweet while strong, percussive while lyrical, active while calm. Centuries of complex tradition are heard in it, as are simple truths.  Doors at 8:00 pm; Show at 8:30 pm  $10  www.ashkenaz.com

April 19, 2013. Avant la conférence:  English-language film entitled, CRISIS IN THE CONGO:  UNCOVERING THE TRUTH.  7pm.  Vista del Lago.  www.afsantarosa.org for details.

April 19, 2013.  THE FRENCH FILM CLUB OF PALO ALTO presents RAJA, a film by JACQUES DOILLON. The film RAJA explores colonialism through the relationship between a middle-aged, bored, jaded, wealthy Frenchman living in Morocco and a young orphaned girl he employs. When Raja (Najat Benssallem) appears to work in the gardens of the Frenchman Fred (Pascal Greggory), he immediately singles her out for attention. She's by no means the prettiest girl of the bunch, but he's inexplicably drawn to her-much to the horror of the older, disapproving and threatened servants he employs in the kitchen. There are huge gaps in education, age and status between Fred and Raja-but Fred, who's "trying to revitalize" his "desire," baldly tells Raja, "You realize that I'll do anything to sleep with you," and he thinks he means it.  In addition to the social inequalities between Fred and Raja, there also exists a substantial language barrier. Raja, who was forced into prostitution as a child, knows a few, elemental French words-including 'money' and 'gift', but both Fred and Raja rely on others to translate their tortured negotiations. Raja's feelings of rage, and vulnerability are transparent, but Fred as an ultimate exploiter who refuses to acknowledge the moral consequences of his actions receives only heavily filtered translations that mirror his own blunted and jaded emotions. In one marvelous scene, Raja attempts to convey her feelings of vulnerability by explaining that as an orphan, she has no one to protect her, but Fred pretentiously replies: "we are all orphans."  http://www.frenchfilmclubofpaloalto.org

April 19, 2013. WE ARE WINNING, DON’T FORGET: SHORT WORKS BY JEAN-GABRIEL PERIOT. 8pm. $6-$10. Jean-Gabriel Périot, born in France in 1974, has over the past fifteen years perfected an innovative filmmaking approach by focusing on archival editing. Moving image and photographic archives make up the raw material of his shorts, which are edited to create an impressionistic story or narrative, typically aided by compelling soundtracks. Periot’s work is distinguished for its intense, emotional approach to contemporary and historic political themes. Despite the labor intensive process of compiling a film via multiple edited images, Périot has made numerous short films using digital video and/or film that reside within combined documentary/essay, animation, and experimental genres. His works have been honored with many prizes and shown worldwide in numerous festivals, institutions, and cinemas. This event is Périot’s first travel to the US. – Sally Berger, Department of Film, MoMA Périot’s first travel to the US begins at the Museum of Modern Art, as part of Modern Mondays, organized for the Museum by Sally Berger, Assistant Curator, The Department of Film, MoMA. April 26, 2013.  PARIS COMBO IN SAN FRANCISCO!  Paris Combo celebrates a rich diversity of world styles but in the setting of chic Parisian cabaret. Fronted by chanteuse, songwriter, and accordionist Belle du Berry, Paris Combo has found a jazzy and intriguing twist on the French song-book tradition. After a five-year break from touring, Paris Combo is now back, with a new release planned for 2012. Four albums and a decade spent touring the globe playing to enthusiastic audiences from Sydney to San Francisco and Berlin to Beirut have enabled Paris Combo to create its own unique world, establishing itself as one of the most piquant, intriguing groups on the international music scene. Fronted by the mischievous vocals of chanteuse Belle du Berry, the combo has struck a positive chord with critics and audiences for their fun-loving mix of jazz, French pop, cabaret, gypsy, Latino and Middle Eastern rhythms. In the early '90s, du Berry, Potzi and François Jeannin first performed together as members of the offbeat retro revue Champêtres de Joie, playing acoustically in the historic Berry Zèbre cinema in Paris' Belleville district. Together they collaborated with French choreographer Philippe Decouflé at the closing ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Albertville. Du Berry met Australian musician David Lewis in 1994 when both were performers at the inaugural Cabaret Sauvage revue (now a popular venue in Paris) and it was not long before he joined the trio. They were then joined by bassist Mano Razanajato, forming what was to become Paris Combo. From 1995-97, the group honed their unique style playing in cafés and on barges moored along the Seine. Du Berry, whose musical roots go back to post-punk bands, often cites influences such as Arletty, the French singer-actress of the '30s, but also the Surrealists and a panoply of more recent artists including the B-52's. Potzi's Django-influenced guitar often mixes with François' ska or Latin grooves to create a fascinating blend. Lewis, who had previously played with a wide variety of French bands including Manu Dibango and Arthur H, attributes the group's approach to Paris' cosmopolitan atmosphere.  8:30pm Palace of fine Arts, San Francisco. www.pariscombo.com

RENOIR.  Set on the French Riviera in the summer of 1915, this rich and sensual drama centers on Impressionist master Pierre-Auguste Renoir, his son Jean, wounded in the First World War, and Andree, the painter's beautiful teenage model. Michel Bouquet is immensely moving as Renoir pere, whose arthritic hands belie his undiminished talents, and Vincent Rottiers portrays Jean Renoir as an unformed young man with no inkling of his destiny as one of the icons of the 20th century's own art, the cinema. And Christa Theret, caressed by the Mediterranean light in sun-drenched images that recall Impressionist paintings, is luminous as the old artist's final muse and the nascent artist's first. Rated R for sequences of art-related nudity and brief language. In French with English subtitles. Music: Alexandre Desplat. Writers: Jerome Tonnerre, Gilles Bourdos. Director: Gilles Bourdos. (France 2012) 111 min. Clay, SF; CinéArts @ Pleasant Hill; Shattuck, Berkeley; Smith-Rafael Film Center, San Rafael.

This national tour We Are Winning, Don’t Forget is organized by Amélie Garin-Davet and Steve Holmgren, and is presented with support from UnionDocs and The Cultural Services of the French Embassy and the Museum of Modern Art. According to BAM/PFA, "At first viewing, de Crignis's paintings appear to be deeply saturated monochromes, but then they reveal themselves to be the result of layers upon layers of thin oil washes (sometimes as many as forty) with resonant tints of other hues...Displayed in natural light, the works are exercises in slow looking, unfolding as one views them from different vantage points."  2626 Bancroft Way, Berkeley.  http://bampfa.berkeley.edu.

He began by commissioning esteemed Italian artists to transform his medieval hunting lodge at Fontainebleau into a showcase royal residence; and Antonio Fantuzzi, René Boyvin, Domenico del Barbiere, Léon Davent and others made engravings and etchings that recorded the multimedia ensembles reflecting the new "Fontainebleau" style. More than 30 of these works have been selected from the collection of Kirk Edward Long to illustrate the sophistication and extravagance of this courtly style.  Cantor Arts Center, Lomita Drive, Stanford University.  650.723.4177 or www.museum.stanford.edu for details.

On-going. WHY NOT MAKE IT BEAUTIFUL? FRENCH TRAVEL POSTERS, 1945-1949, presented by the Nevada State Museum. French travel posters given to Nevada in 1949 in gratitude for American support following World War II will make their debut at the Nevada State Museum beginning May 23. Commissioned and printed by the Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français, the French National Railways, the 21 posters depict stunning French landscapes, historical provinces and cultural regions. Why Not Make it Beautiful? French Travel Posters 1945-1949 features artwork carried aboard the Merci Boxcar, or Gratitude Train, in February of 1949. Research indicates that all states received a set of posters, yet only three appear to have retained possession of their collection, and Nevada will be the only state to exhibit them. Staff from the Nevada State Museum and Nevada State Archives restored the posters for the exhibit generously sponsored by Hazel Woodgate and the John and Grace Naumann Foundation. In 1947 the American people collected 700 boxcars loaded with food, clothing and fuel to help the people of France who were struggling desperately to recover from World War II. This "Friendship Train" stopped in Reno to collect the food gathered from all across the state of Nevada. In 1949 the French people collected a trainload of gifts for the Americans, filling 49 boxcars with tokens and treasures from the French provinces, one for each state and one to be shared between Hawaii and Washington D.C. The existence of these trains, and a time when international friendship was on a citizen-to-citizen scale is nearly forgotten. Most Nevadans have little knowledge of this chapter in our history. The notes and the significance of the gifts represent the best of humanity; the kindness that humans can give and share in the face of great suffering, the deep connection possible across cultural and spatial boundaries. FLORENCE DE BRETAGNE. Florence de Bretagne is a French painter and photographer. Her work is full of joy and very colorful. It has always something to do with new life : imaginary plants that are flourishing, blossoms, seeds. It seems that nature is new and beautiful like new-born babies. She took abstract pictures of fruits and vegetables (a very poetic book, "Semence", is still available), she made paintings on trees and imaginary plants, and many others. You can see her work either in the SFMOMA gallery at Fort Mason, or in her atelier (756 Garland Drive in Palo Alto), or else on her website : http://www.florencedebretagne.com

CONTEMPORARY LANDSCAPES OF SOUTHERN FRANCE, by ANDREA WEDELL.  Expat Andrea Wedell, originally from the Bay Area and living in France for the past 24 years, would love for you to visit her painting : contemporary landscapes of Southern France. She works with texture and vibrant, bold color that is built up in multiple layers and glazed on. Her landscapes are semi-abstract to abstract poetic interpretations of her environment in Cassis, or bits  and pieces of it as she sees and feels it– from lively, magical gardens with their sweet smells , to turquoise and deep orange underwater scenes, pink and bright white cliffs built up over millions of years, villages that have retained their authentic charm, sparkling ocean and wide expanses of sky. You can see her work virtually on her website :   www.gallerywedell.com If you sign up on the blog, you will receive monthly posts, a journal of art and life in the South of France. www.gallerywedell.com/blog

FRENCH AS YOU LIKE IT.  French As You Like It offers private French lessons and cultural coaching in Paris for professionals, expats, tourists, students, and children. We believe in giving the highest standard of customer service and our values are:  Quality - Experienced French teachers who are fluent in English, are from Paris and have university degrees in teaching French as a second language.  Flexibility-  Our teachers are available between 8am and 8pm at clients homes, at unique cultural places in Paris, at client offices or at our classroom facility in the Marais.   Innovation - Highly customized private French lessons that are proven to speed French speaking and written abilities during stays in Paris.  Our founder, Marguerite Monnier started French As You Like It in 2006 after returning to France from San Francisco. She wanted to use her experience of moving to the U.S. and then back to France to help Anglophones settling and visiting Paris. French As You Like It now has seven teachers and has worked with over 500 students here in Paris.  At French As You Like It, we consider Paris our classroom. We believe people learn faster and easier if they are engaging the language through topics and locations that interest them. Each of our students has a personalized program based on their needs and level. For working professionals, we also come to offices, but again design a program around the student’s interests. For a history buff, the teacher might review irregular verbs while discussing the French revolution.  While we do use grammar books and give homework, our students have fun learning French because they are engaged by an activity or subject that interests them.  Our fees range from 45 euros to 75 euros per hour depending on your requirement, situation and program and more information about us can be found on our website www.frenchasyoulikeit.com and on our facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/French-As-You-Like-It/115835031825132

FRENCH PRIMARY CLASS AT THE RENAISSANCE SCHOOL IN OAKLAND. The Renaissance School (TRS), a private Montessori school in Oakland, California for ages 2 years old through middle school, announces it has openings in its French Primary class for children ages four and five years old, born between September 1, 2007 and August 31, 2008.  Students in the French Primary class are introduced to conversational French and are conversed with and instructed at all times in both English and French. Because they are taught by native speakers, children acquire the correct accent and language patterns. The written form of the language is introduced in both languages at this level allowing the children to learn to write and read by the end of that level.  At the Elementary level, students continue to develop their linguistic skills by adding Spanish, bringing to bear a genuine tri-language immersion program. The Renaissance School is believed to be the only Montessori school in the United States that offers a genuine three-language immersion program.  Tours of the school are available by appointment. To schedule a tour of the school, email info@therenaisanceschool.org or call 510-531-8566. Visit:  http://www.therenaissanceschool.org

SANTA ROSA FRENCH-AMERICAN CHARTER SCHOOL.  SRFACS will open in the fall of 2012 for first through fourth grades, and will expand through the eighth grade in the future.  This information is being provided as a courtesy to you. There is no affiliation between SRFACS (Santa Rosa French-American Charter School) and AFSR (Alliance Française de Santa Rosa).  For more information about the Charter School, please contact Nas Salamati:  info@srfacs.org  If interested in sending your children to SRFACS, please sign the SRFACS Petition and send it to:  SRFACS (Santa Rosa French-American Charter School)  2097 Stagecoach Rd, Suite 220  Santa Rosa, CA 95404  US  On Friday the 8th of April 2011, Jacqueline Lindenfeld and I attended an informational meeting about a proposed Santa Rosa French-American Charter School known as SRFACS. This meeting was well attended, and we were impressed by the presenters who are leaders in the community in the fields of education and health/nutrition. Other members are leaders in the fields of communications and engineering. SRFACS will open in the fall of 2012 for first through fourth grades, and will expand through the eighth grade in the future.  Their goal is to offer children a solid education based on high academic standards and exposure to the global world. The dual-immersion French-American Charter School curriculum will employ a formula with a proven track record in private schools, and more recently, in charter schools on the East Coast. This opportunity will now be extended to everyone in our community via a free public charter school.  Any parent interested in having their child enrolled in a charter school focused on academic excellence with an opening to the global world is a parent  SRFACS would love to have. There are no enrollment ‘requirements’ (speaking French for example), and that is one of the great strengths of this school.  SRFACS is currently gathering signatures of parents interested in enrolling their children. You may contact this organization at: info@srfacs.org,  or sign the petition above and mail it in.  Lise Melin  Directrice de l’école @ AFSR.

May 4, 2013. CCSF, Visual Arts Building, Rm V114. reneemorel@gmail.com

May 5, 2013.  FRENCH LITERATURE MEETUP GROUP. Starting on the Rue Saint-Jacques then trekking 750 miles south to Roncesvalles, Spain, their eccentric route takes 72 days on Roman roads and pilgrimage paths—a 1,100-year-old network of trails leading to the sanctuary of Saint James the Greater. It is best known as El Camino de Santiago de Compostela—“The Way” for short. The object of any pilgrimage is an inward journey manifested in a long, reflective walk. For Downie, the inward journey met the outer one: a combination of self-discovery and physical regeneration. More than 200,000 pilgrims take the highly commercialized Spanish route annually, but few cross France. May 21, 2013. 4pm.  www.afsantarosa.org for details.

November 2013.  SAN FRANCISCO OPERA presents THE BARBER OF SEVILLE.  With the help of a wily barber, a strong-willed young woman outwits a lecherous old man in this eternally fresh comic masterpiece featuring Rossini’s wittiest, most charming score and two charismatic casts. One features Isabel Leonard, "a lively stage presence and a radiant lyric voice" (The New York Times); Lucas Meachem, who displayed "vocal brilliance" and "theatrical panache" in the title role of San Francisco Opera’s Don Giovanni (2011) (San Francisco Chronicle); and rising tenor Javier Camarena, praised by Opera News for his "exquisite finesse." The other equally stunning cast features Daniela Mack, who sings Rossini "with technical command and expressive ease" (Opera News); the "smooth-voiced" Audun Iversen (The New York Times); and Alek Shrader, whose "bright singing" is matched with "matinee-idol good looks" (New York Times). Resident Conductor Giuseppe Finzi, who leads the San Francisco Opera Orchestra with "vigor and clarity" (San Francisco Chronicle), returns to the podium.  www.sfopera.com for details.
