Through April 3, 2014. JE REVIENS DE LA VERITE / I RETURN FROM THE TRUTH, based on CHARLOTTE DELBO's QUI RAPPORTERA CES PAROLES? and performed by PROSPERO MIRANDA, on tour in various Bay Area locations. Prospero Miranda Theater Company (Paris, France) on tour in the San Francisco Bay Area with a deeply moving show about the second World War and deportation I Return from the Truth Adaptation of the play « Who will carry the word? » by Charlotte Delbo. Staging by Agnès Braunschweig-Ferrandis. The 2013 French National Celebration commemorates the hundredth birthday of author, playwright and member of the French Resistance, Charlotte Delbo (1913--1985). French public discovered again the strength and the beauty of her work. The outlines of the three actresses stand out in an immaculate circle, shadows of women in the concentration camp of Auschwitz. In the dense and luminous language of Charlotte Delbo, they tell the tragedy of pain as well as the miracles of solidarity. Charlotte Delbo recounts History through a testimony devoid of hatred and full of hope. The emotions are restrained, being more intense for it ; the words, heartrending with beauty and truth. Thursday, April 3, 2014 at 7.30 pm in Main Theater (Wright Hall) UC Davis Admission to the event is free. No reservation needed. April 3, 2014. FIRST THURSDAY MEETUP AT THE HOTEL REX, organized by LES AMI(E)S FRANÇAIS DE SAN FRANCISCO. 562 Sutter, SF. 7pm. www.meetup.com for details.
Opening April 4, 2014. LES INFIDELES / THE PLAYERS. Eight short films explore the subject of male infidelity starring Oscar winner Jean Dujardin (THe Artist) and Gilles Lellouche (Tell No One, Mesrine). Serial cheaters, Fred and Greg, spend a night on the town doing what they do best, and with absolutely no regrets. The duo play various characters in assorted extracurricular situations, ranging from sexist to the darker sides of carnal desires. In French with English Subtitles. Rialto, Sebastopol.
Opening April 4, 2014. ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE TRACKS. Two French cops raised On the Other Side of the Tracks (De l’autre côté du périph) team up for action, mayhem and classconscious humor in this throwback buddy caper starring Intouchables golden boy Omar Sy. Wearing its 80’s movie references proudly on its sleeve, this old school cop thriller from director David Charhon (Cyprien) features lots of fun-filled comic banter between Sy and co-star Laurent Lafitte, as their characters cross social and geographical barriers to investigate the murder of a business mogul’s wife. Kicking off with a chase on the beltway (or périphérique, as per the French title) separating Paris from its tougher, economically strapped banlieues, we’re quickly introduced to bad boy detective Ousmane (Sy), who wrecks his car and is then mistaken for the assailant by his fellow police officers. (This will not be the last time that happens.) The next day, the body of a woman married to industry tycoon Chaligny (André Marcon) turns up nearby Ousmane’s Bobigny housing project, and he draws a connection between the two incidents that may help him solve both crimes at once. But in order to make himself heard, Ousmane needs to hook up with a visiting Parisian investigator who has much more departmental clout: the smooth-talking, germ-hating pretty boy François Monge (Lafitte). As incompatible as the different neighborhoods where they live and work, the pair eventually finds common ground through their love of manhandling suspects and kicking butt, making their way from the projects to Paris and back again, and proving that the boundaries dividing them are less ominous than most people would think. In French with English Subtitles Written by Jordan Mintzer, The Hollywood Reporter RIALTO, Sebastopol. 6868 McKinley Street Sebastopol, CA 95472 707 525-4840 www.rialtocinemas.com

April 4, 2014. HALLIFAX & JEFFREY, viols, with guest JOHN LENTI, theorbo, perform FRENCH FRIDAY: MARAIS, DOLLÉ , BOISMORTIER, CAIX D’HERVELOIS AND MORE. Violists Peter Hallifax and Julie Jeffrey (the Barefoot house band), return this year with fabulous guest theorbo player John Lenti and a program of drippingly elegant French music. As always in this music, gesture is everything, and “little gorgeous things” are everywhere. Marais wrote that one could play his music in a variety of instrumentations, but that two viols and a theorbo would always sound best. We agree. Composers will include but by no means be limited to Marais, Dollé, Boismortier, and Caix D’Hervelois (including the infamous programmatic romp, “Cors de Chasse”). Friday, April 4, 2014, 6 p.m. St. Mark’s Episcopal Church Parish Hall, 2300 Bancroft Way, Berkeley Tickets $15 general, $13 seniors/students/SFEMS members 18 and under admitted free and welcome. April 5, 2014. TOM RIGNEY & FLAMBEAU play Cajun/Zydeco/Blues at Ashkenaz. He may have been crowned Emperor of the 2011 Sacramento Jazz Jubilee, but violinist-fiddler-composer and singer TOM RIGNEY and his band Flambeau have always been royalty at Ashkenaz. In recent months the band has gone from Belgium to most of the West Coast outdoor festivals. When not globetrotting, they hold court here almost monthly, playing the "hits" and Rigney's own tunes. Rigney's latest CD, "Shadows on the Moon," is a change of pace from his concerts, featuring airs, ballads, and waltzes - mostly Rigney's original instrumental compositions, along with a beautiful instrumental version of Kate Wolf's "Brother Warrior." He and Flambeau will include some of the CD's mid-tempo and slow tunes tonight along with their usual high-energy mix of Cajun, zydeco, and blues favorites. Tom Rigney & Flambeau play traditional Cajun and zydeco two-steps and waltzes along with low-down blues and New Orleans R&B. What sets them apart is Rigney's fresh musical takes on Cajun and zydeco, and other styles he loves to play from rock to classical, creating a celebration of life through dance rhythms. Flambeau is a tight ensemble of virtuoso musicians, with guitarist Danny Caron (Charles Brown's bandleader; he and Rigney met when both backed up Rockin' Sidney in the '80s), boogie-woogie keyboardist Caroline Dahl, bassist and singer Steve Parks, and drummer Brent Rampone. Doors at 7:30 pm; Cajun/Zydeco dance lesson at 8:00 pm; Show at 9:00 pm $13/$10 students. www.ashkenaz.com

Singer and accordionist Pete (PD) Grimaldi formed the band in 1996 after a stint as a promoter of shows in hometown Modesto by acts from Queen Ida and Buckwheat Zydeco to Tom Rigney. That exposure to music from Louisiana and beyond inspired Grimaldi to pick up the squeezebox himself and put his own spin on "roots music." The current BBBB also features Pete's brother Frank Grimaldi on lead guitar, bassist and singer Julie Johnson, and a rotating cast of friends including drummer Peter DeMattos and rubboard player Deb Krilanovich. Doors at 7:30 pm; Cajun/Zydeco dance lesson with Cheryl McBride at 8:00 pm; Show at 8:30 pm, $10. www.ashkenaz.com

European economic connections with the Bay Area are deep and continue to generate shared value. What role do the collaborative relationships with Europe play in the Bay Area’s innovation economy? How do Europeans enrich the local talent pool? Do patterns differ from those of talent from other parts of the world? In what ways are the Bay Area and Europe investing in each other? What burning policy issues have potential of strengthening or weakening the ties between the Bay Area and Europe? April 25, 2014. AUTHOR LINDA G. MCCABE presents a modern retelling of the CHANSONS DE GESTE. In English. Vista del Lago. For several centuries troubadours in southern France and Northern Italy created a cycle of legends regarding Charlemagne and his paladins, the most famous is the Chanson de Roland. The public adored hearing new adventures of characters they had come to know and love, and villains they loved to hate. These included Roland, Olivier, Ogier the Dane, Duke Namo, Renaud de Montauban, Maugis the wizard and Ganelon the betrayer. These legends were written in both French and Italian, although ironically what has come to be called the "Matters of France," are today more widely known in Italy than they are in France. Ten years ago, Linda C. McCabe read the classic epic poem Orlando furioso and became captivated by a rich narrative tapestry involving chivalry, honor, pride, secret romances, magic and heroism. She felt cheated for never having heard of the respected warrior maiden, Bradamante, from literature. McCabe decided to turn her own writing talents to adapt these legends into a series of novels for modern day audiences. She began her own extensive research about Charlemagne, the Medieval period's customs, foods, as well as religious practices of the time for both Christians and Muslim. McCabe traveled to France twice to see the settings for her novel. Her presentation will be part travelogue and part literary discussion about the legends of Charlemagne. She will show pictures taken during her travels including the Roman arenas in Paris and Arles, museum artifacts from the Musée de l'Armée, Musée du Moyen Age, and the Musée Carnavalet, Carcassonne, the medieval castle building project of Guédelon using thirteenth century techniques, as well as cities and villages used in her novel including Toulouse, Montauban, Foix, Bruniquel, Cordes-sur-Ciel, and Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val. Her favorite adventure was finding sacred sites associated with an obscure saint who was once a soldier in Charlemagne's army before becoming a hermit in the Quercy region. Copies of her novel Quest of the Warrior Maiden will be available for sale after the presentation. www.afsantarosa.org

April 25-May 25, 2014. CUTTING BALL THEATER presents COMMUNIQUÉ n°10 by SAMUEL GALLET, in a new translation by Rob Melrose. In a city engulfed by riots a young Muslim man is killed after a confrontation with a security guard. His brother, Hassan, vows vengeance and attempts to take control over his seemingly written destiny. Rebels, vagrants, and officers of the law all seek asylum. Their elders, who have difficulty making sense of society’s radical changes, are simultaneously dead and very much alive to bear witness to the resulting devastation. All hide in fear from unseen state forces as they contemplate the consequences of action and inaction. Exploring the tensions of the underclass in a city that is bursting at the seams, French playwright Samuel Gallet’s Communiqué n° 10 was inspired by the 2005 Paris riots led by North African youth. Cutting Ball’s production examines the assumptions we make about immigrants, and the connections we make with Muslim identities and violence. Melrose’s translation of Communiqué n° 10 was commissioned and developed as a part of the 2012 Des Voix Festival and is produced in association with Golden Thread Productions. http://cuttingball.com/season/13-14/communique-n-10/ for details.

ERNEST & CELESTINE. French animated feature from charming children’s book – Oscar nominated. Deep below snowy, cobblestone streets, tucked away in networks of winding subterranean tunnels, lives a civilization of hard-working mice, terrified of the bears who live above ground. Unlike her fellow mice, Celestine is an artist and a dreamer—and when she nearly ends up as breakfast for ursine troubadour Ernest, the two form an unlikely bond. But it isn't long before their friendship is put to the test by their respective bear-fearing and mice-eating communities. Magical and funny, ERNEST & CELESTINE joyfully leaps across genres, propelled with brilliant comic timing, to capture the kinetic possibilities of animated storytelling. Bringing it all together is the warm on-screen chemistry between the two lead characters—a tender and playful rapport that will put a smile on your face and touch your heart. Based on the classic Belgian book series by Gabrielle Vincent, and directed by Stéphane Aubier, Vincent Patar, and Benjamin Renner, the film is the winner of France's César Award for Best Animated Feature, and nominee for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. 6868 McKinley Street Sebastopol, CA 95472 707 525-4840 www.rialtocinemas.com Opening April 4, 2014.

On-going. WHY NOT MAKE IT BEAUTIFUL? FRENCH TRAVEL POSTERS, 1945-1949, presented by the Nevada State Museum. French travel posters given to Nevada in 1949 in gratitude for American support following World War II will make their debut at the Nevada State Museum beginning May 23. Commissioned and printed by the Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français, the French National Railways, the 21 posters depict stunning French landscapes, historical provinces and cultural regions. Why Not Make it Beautiful? French Travel Posters 1945-1949 features artwork carried aboard the Merci Boxcar, or Gratitude Train, in February of 1949. Research indicates that all states received a set of posters, yet only three appear to have retained possession of their collection, and Nevada will be the only state to exhibit them. Staff from the Nevada State Museum and Nevada State Archives restored the posters for the exhibit generously sponsored by Hazel Woodgate and the John and Grace Naumann Foundation. In 1947 the American people collected 700 boxcars loaded with food, clothing and fuel to help the people of France who were struggling desperately to recover from World War II. This "Friendship Train" stopped in Reno to collect the food gathered from all across the state of Nevada. In 1949 the French people collected a trainload of gifts for the Americans, filling 49 boxcars with tokens and treasures from the French provinces, one for each state and one to be shared between Hawaii and Washington D.C. The existence of these trains, and a time when international friendship was on a citizen-to-citizen scale is nearly forgotten. Most Nevadans have little knowledge of this chapter in our history. The notes and the significance of the gifts represent the best of humanity; the kindness that humans can give and share in the face of great suffering, the deep connection possible across cultural and spatial boundaries. FLORENCE DE BRETAGNE. Florence de Bretagne is a French painter and photographer. Her work is full of joy and very colorful. It has always something to do with new life : imaginary plants that are flourishing, blossoms, seeds. It seems that nature is new and beautiful like new-born babies. She took abstract pictures of fruits and vegetables (a very poetic book, "Semence", is still available), she made paintings on trees and imaginary plants, and many others. You can see her work either in the SFMOMA gallery at Fort Mason, or in her atelier (756 Garland Drive in Palo Alto), or else on her website : http://www.florencedebretagne.com
CONTEMPORARY LANDSCAPES OF SOUTHERN FRANCE, by ANDREA WEDELL. She works with texture and vibrant, bold color that is built up in multiple layers and glazed on. Her landscapes are semi-abstract to abstract poetic interpretations of her environment in Cassis, or bits and pieces of it as she sees and feels it– from lively, magical gardens with their sweet smells , to turquoise and deep orange underwater scenes, pink and bright white cliffs built up over millions of years, villages that have retained their authentic charm, sparkling ocean and wide expanses of sky. You can see her work virtually on her website : www.gallerywedell.com If you sign up on the blog, you will receive monthly posts, a journal of art and life in the South of France. www.gallerywedell.com/blog

April 8-May 20, 2014. 1940-1944: PARIS UNDER THE OCCUPATION. A class taught by RENEE MOREL. The signature of the June 22, 1940, Armistice shattered the soul of the French nation, but also forced people to rethink their daily lives. Under the Nazi boot, requisitions, rationing and long lines became the daily lot of the population. Everything, from socks to staples, had to be bought with supply coupons. How could a capital function without transportation? Food? Basic services? Black market, grey market, solidarity, stoicism, and amazing human ingeniousness all helped Parisians survive these extraordinarily trying times. Indeed, cafés remained open, as did cinemas and concert-halls. NOTE: The class is entirely taught in French. Students are encouraged to participate and should have an intermediate to advanced knowledge of French. Cost: $175 ($160 if registered up to one week before the class begins). Tuesday evenings (7 weeks): 4/8/2014-5/20/2014. Times: 6:30-9:30 PM. Location: Downtown campus (4th Street & Mission). Material fee (payable to the instructor): $2 (no book to purchase). SUMMER PROGRAMS AT THE ALLIANCE FRANÇAISE DE SANTA ROSA. Our summer program is all set and ready to go. Our schedule is posted online now, and will appear in the bulletin in June. We will be offering many wonderful classes. As in years past, classes stand on their own in the summer, and students may choose three individual classes anywhere on our calendar. In other words, each date is an individual class. By popular demand, we are making an exception to this for TOTAL beginners. For them, we offer a 5-day summer camp (August 5th to August 9th) where students improve incrementally from day to day. We will also have two CHILDREN’S CAMPS. The first for students continuing with their French studies (level 2) (10:00AM to 12:00), and another for students new to French (level 1) 3:00 to 5:00PM. Both these camps will take place on the same week (August 5th to August 9th). You may reserve a seat in those camps as soon as you are ready. We have a maximum of 10 students in our children's camps. For immediate information, please consult our webpage: www.afsantarosa.org
FRENCH AS YOU LIKE IT. French As You Like It offers private French lessons and cultural coaching in Paris for professionals, expats, tourists, students, and children. We believe in giving the highest standard of customer service and our values are: Quality - Experienced French teachers who are fluent in English, are from Paris and have university degrees in teaching French as a second language. Flexibility- Our teachers are available between 8am and 8pm at clients homes, at unique cultural places in Paris, at client offices or at our classroom facility in the Marais. Innovation - Highly customized private French lessons that are proven to speed French speaking and written abilities during stays in Paris. Our founder, Marguerite Monnier started French As You Like It in 2006 after returning to France from San Francisco. She wanted to use her experience of moving to the U.S. and then back to France to help Anglophones settling and visiting Paris. French As You Like It now has seven teachers and has worked with over 500 students here in Paris. At French As You Like It, we consider Paris our classroom. We believe people learn faster and easier if they are engaging the language through topics and locations that interest them. Each of our students has a personalized program based on their needs and level. For working professionals, we also come to offices, but again design a program around the student’s interests. For a history buff, the teacher might review irregular verbs while discussing the French revolution. While we do use grammar books and give homework, our students have fun learning French because they are engaged by an activity or subject that interests them. Our fees range from 45 euros to 75 euros per hour depending on your requirement, situation and program and more information about us can be found on our website www.frenchasyoulikeit.com and on our facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/French-As-You-Like-It/115835031825132

FRENCH PRIMARY CLASS AT THE RENAISSANCE SCHOOL IN OAKLAND. The Renaissance School (TRS), a private Montessori school in Oakland, California for ages 2 years old through middle school, announces it has openings in its French Primary class for children ages four and five years old, born between September 1, 2007 and August 31, 2008. Students in the French Primary class are introduced to conversational French and are conversed with and instructed at all times in both English and French. At the Elementary level, students continue to develop their linguistic skills by adding Spanish, bringing to bear a genuine tri-language immersion program. The Renaissance School is believed to be the only Montessori school in the United States that offers a genuine three-language immersion program. Tours of the school are available by appointment. May 4, 2014. Heure: 3-5pm. Lieu: Berkeley, Location TBA. For more information, contact : Charlie Klein, email@example.com tel. (510) 530-5078, or go to www.meetup.com/The-French-Literature-Meetup-Group.

May 17, 2014. DANS LA PEAU D’UN NOIR / BLACK LIKE ME, performed by CLEMENTINE CELARIE. In French with English subtitles. The performance will be followed by a discussion with the actor and director. Tickets will only be sold online. http://blacklikeme.brownpapertickets.com/ for tickets.
