The ensemble boasts a collection of diverse and experienced musicians from both Africa and the U.S. under the direction of Zimbabwean dancer and musician Julia Tsitsi Chigamba, who started the group when she moved to Oakland in 2001. Tonight Chinyakare will be joined by special guests MOHAMED LAMINE BANGOURA (of Guinea) Mohamed Lamine Bangoura (percussion and dance) and the KTO Project's founder/director Kelly Takunda Orphan. This "mini-festival" is a fundraiser to assist in building a larger structure for performances at the traditional village in Zimbabwe that Chigamba has helped create (see details below).   Note:  From Guinea, Mohamed Lamine Bangoura brings his open heart and joyful spirit that teach as much about Guinean music as his drumming. The founder of Afrique Sogue, he is a djembe-fola (professional/master drummer) and has trained and performed throughout West Africa.   All funds raised from tonight's event will go to the Chigamba Cultural Center in Harare, Zimbabwe, which is used to teach, present, and preserve Zimbabwean traditional music and dance and also develop educational projects for women, men, and children. Julia Chigamba will visit the center and teach there Sep. 9-28. She is organizing a "tour" for those who want to accompany her and experience Zimbabwe village life as it is today - its music and dance, food, and culture. Doors at 9:00 pm; Show at 9:30 pm $15/$12 advance & students. www.ashkenaz.com for details.

June 10, 2014.  STEVE RILEY & THE MAMOU PLAYBOYS perform at Ashkenaz. Grammy Award-winning Cajun accordionist STEVE RILEY & THE MAMOU PLAYBOYS return to our stage after a 12-year absence, although they've been very busy in the interim, racking up four Grammy nominations for the band and touring seemingly everywhere. Now in their 26th year, the Mamou Playboys play their own version of roots Cajun music from their Southern Louisiana home area, chronicled on 13 albums including the most recent, "Grand Isle." Riley is a Grammy Award-winner for the self-titled recording by the Cajun all-star band "The Band Courtboullion" with Wayne Toups and Wilson Savoy. It was produced by Joel Savoy for his record label, Valcour (Joel will play on our stage in his band with Jesse Lége on June 24).  Riley formed the Mamou Playboys in 1988 after he met David Greely at the Savoy Music Center in Eunice, Louisiana (the home of Cajun greats Marc and Ann Savoy). They put together a band that played for some years in Baton Rouge, quickly attracting attention and dancers for their stunningly fresh take on Cajun French music from the backwaters of Southwest Louisiana. Their reputation spread as they began issuing CDs and touring. The current Mamou Playboys feature Riley on Cajun accordion and vocals, former Bay Area bluegrass-Cajun fiddle star Kevin Wimmer, guitarist Sam Broussard, drummer Kevin Dugas, and bassist Brazos Huval.  Doors at 7:30 pm; Cajun/Zydeco dance lesson with Dana DeSimone at 8:00 pm; Show at 8:30 pm.  $18 advance / $20 day of show / $18 students. www.ashkenaz.com

June 20-21, 2014.  FIRST FESTIVAL OF FRENCH CLASSICAL MUSIC IN SILICON VALLEY.  On June 20, the group “Ensemble San Francisco”, an exciting group of noted Bay Area soloists, will present a wide variety of works in an all-French program entitled “Une Soirée Parisienne.”  The ensemble will begin with Darius Milhaud’s jazzy 1923 ballet La creation du monde, which describes the creation of the world as told in African mythology. The music combines modernist musical techniques with forms from popular music, tinged with exotic rhythms from jazz and African folklore.  Clarinetist Roman Fukshansky and bassoonist Rufus Olivier will join together in Francis Poulenc’s virtuoso romp, the Sonata for Clarinet and Bassoon. Composed in 1922, Poulenc called it “an entertainment.”  Violinist Rebecca Jackson, accompanied by pianist Christine McLeavey Payne, will perform Maurice Ravel’s fiery Tzigane. Ravel’s hair-raising synthesis of elements from gypsy music represents one of the summits of violin virtuosity.  Gabriel Fauré’s Piano Quartet No. 1 is a landmark in French chamber music. This passionate Romantic music was produced in the midst of an emotional crisis in the life of the composer: his engagement and subsequent rupture with Marieanne Viardot, the daughter of the celebrated opera singer Pauline Viardot. Christine McLeavey Payne is the featured pianist in this work.  Cellist Jonah Kim has produced a fascinating mélange of tunes made famous by the world-famous chanteuse Edith Piaf.  On June 21, twenty major instrumentalists and singers will present a four French works in a program entitled “Musique de Chambre Virtuose” (Virtuoso Chamber Music). The major work of the evening is Ernest Chausson’s Concert pour violon, piano et quatuor a cordes. This unusual double concerto will feature violin soloist Stephen Waarts and piano soloist Gwendolyn Mok. Stephen is the recent First Prize winner of the Yehudi Menuhin International Competition. Gwendolyn is an internationally-renowned soloist who has appeared in concertos with the London Symphony, and the Hague Philharmonic.  Opera star mezzo-soprano Layna Chiankis will perform Maurice Ravel’s thrilling Chanson’s madecasses (Madegascan Songs). She will be accompanied by pianist Gwendolyn Mok, flutist Teresa Orozco and cellist Michael Graham.  Isabelle Chapuis (Principal Flute of Opera San Jose) will perform Andre Jolivet’s avant-garde Suite en concert (1966) for flute and percussion ensemble, conducted by Mark Starr. Isabelle and Mark are comusical directors of the Alliance Française Silicon Valley Festival of French Classical Music.  A quartet of noted Bay Area flutists with piano will perform a tour de force by Charles-Valentin Alkan entitled Comme le vent (Like the Wind.) Originally composed in 1857 for piano solo, it is here.  Location:  Tateuchi Hall, Mountain View, 214 seats.  State of the art acoustic material and architecture.  http://www.afscv.org/first-festival-of-french-classical-music-in-silicon-valley/ or  alliance@afscv.org for details.

Odiorne, an American, came to Paris in 1924. Despite the new photographic modernism emerging all around him, Odiorne preferred to work in a more traditional style. He captured a romantic, classical vision of Paris in the 1920’s. His images are pictorial -- soft focus and impressionistic.  Robert Tat Gallery, 49 Geary St., Suite 410.  415.781.1122 or www.roberttat.com

June 5-July 31, 2014.  WORKS BY LISA SPENDOV AT THE ALLIANCE FRANÇAISE DE SAN FRANCISCO.  Born and raised in France on the outskirts of Brittany, Lisa moved to San Francisco at the age of 21 and instantly fell in love with this majestic city. She  eventually went back to Europe for a while and lived on the East Coast for almost a decade. After 20 years She made her way back to the Bay Area and moved to Mill Valley in July 2013.  Introduced to art through the world of music as a child, Lisa started  painting 10 years ago. With guidance and direction from her gifted teacher James Feehan, a local Bucks County artist my passion for art blossomed. By sharing his love for art, James took her on a wonderful journey over the course of 5 years which deepened her need to create.  From the very beginning of Lisa's training with James, she was greatly influenced by David Hockney whose choice of subjects and colors fell into total harmony with her own perception of life.  "I choose my subjects because they speak to me, either on an aesthetic or emotional level. I then let my inspiration and imagination take full control, what you see on the canvas is the end result of these two aspects of my mind. Painting makes me happy and serene, I feel centered and focused and perfectly connected with the child within." 1345 Bush St., SF.  www.afsf.com or 415.775.7755 for details.

On-going. WHY NOT MAKE IT BEAUTIFUL? FRENCH TRAVEL POSTERS, 1945-1949, presented by the Nevada State Museum. French travel posters given to Nevada in 1949 in gratitude for American support following World War II will make their debut at the Nevada State Museum beginning May 23. Commissioned and printed by the Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français, the French National Railways, the 21 posters depict stunning French landscapes, historical provinces and cultural regions. Why Not Make it Beautiful? French Travel Posters 1945-1949 features artwork carried aboard the Merci Boxcar, or Gratitude Train, in February of 1949. Research indicates that all states received a set of posters, yet only three appear to have retained possession of their collection, and Nevada will be the only state to exhibit them. Staff from the Nevada State Museum and Nevada State Archives restored the posters for the exhibit generously sponsored by Hazel Woodgate and the John and Grace Naumann Foundation. In 1947 the American people collected 700 boxcars loaded with food, clothing and fuel to help the people of France who were struggling desperately to recover from World War II. This "Friendship Train" stopped in Reno to collect the food gathered from all across the state of Nevada. In 1949 the French people collected a trainload of gifts for the Americans, filling 49 boxcars with tokens and treasures from the French provinces, one for each state and one to be shared between Hawaii and Washington D.C. The existence of these trains, and a time when international friendship was on a citizen-to-citizen scale is nearly forgotten. Most Nevadans have little knowledge of this chapter in our history. The notes and the significance of the gifts represent the best of humanity; the kindness that humans can give and share in the face of great suffering, the deep connection possible across cultural and spatial boundaries. Nevada State Museum/Bretzlaff History Resource Center Hours: 8:30 to 4:30 Wed. - Sat. by appointment 775/687-4810, x240 or SueAnn.Monteleone@nevadaculture.org or http://museums.nevadaculture.org/index.php?option=com_wrapper&Itemid=431

FLORENCE DE BRETAGNE. Florence de Bretagne is a French painter and photographer. Her work is full of joy and very colorful. It has always something to do with new life : imaginary plants that are flourishing, blossoms, seeds. It seems that nature is new and beautiful like new-born babies. She took abstract pictures of fruits and vegetables (a very poetic book, "Semence", is still available), she made paintings on trees and imaginary plants, and many others. You can see her work either in the SFMOMA gallery at Fort Mason, or in her atelier (756 Garland Drive in Palo Alto), or else on her website : http://www.florencedebretagne.com

CONTEMPORARY LANDSCAPES OF SOUTHERN FRANCE, by ANDREA WEDELL.  Expat Andrea Wedell, originally from the Bay Area and living in France for the past 24 years, would love for you to visit her painting : contemporary landscapes of Southern France. She works with texture and vibrant, bold color that is built up in multiple layers and glazed on. Her landscapes are semi-abstract to abstract poetic interpretations of her environment in Cassis, or bits  and pieces of it as she sees and feels it– from lively, magical gardens with their sweet smells , to turquoise and deep orange underwater scenes, pink and bright white cliffs built up over millions of years, villages that have retained their authentic charm, sparkling ocean and wide expanses of sky. You can see her work virtually on her website :   www.gallerywedell.com If you sign up on the blog, you will receive monthly posts, a journal of art and life in the South of France. www.gallerywedell.com/blog

Beginning June 12, 2014.  SIX-WEEK WORKSHOP:  SPIRITUAL MEMOIRES: A FRENCH WRITING JOURNEY TO OUR ROOTS. To write and speak in a foreign language gives us, in many ways, the new eyes we need to look at life differently; it creates space for presence, openness and joyful exploration. Writers such as Beckett or Ionesco found their true writer’s voice and sensibility through the French language. Like them, when using this language, you will gain unique insights and be able to express and share yourself in ways that will surprise you over and over again. Claude Convers offers a warm, stimulating and supportive environment to revisit your personal history and find ways to retell it with a new vocabulary. Through “French” eyes, you will find a new clarity, detachment and vibrancy. This workshop is for advanced-beginner, intermediate and advanced French speakers who wants to connect to their roots as writer, human being and seeker. On this journey you will: . Write with the help of prompts, imagery and mindfulness exercises . Experiment with and refine your writing craft . Share and discuss your work . Expand your French vocabulary and knowledge . Confront your inner critics with French humor . Receive help in clarifying your thoughts . Revisit and integrate your past with compassion Thursdays, June 12, 19, 26, and July 10, 17 and 24 from 6pm to 8pm,  $270 per person For more info please email at claude@thefrenchsalon.com, call 510 467 2618 or visit www.thefrenchsalon.com

Watercolor & Fluid Acrylic The Polynesian Islands of Tahiti and Huahine are enchantment itself. Volcanic peaks rise above lush and rugged valleys; tropical fruits and flowers grow in abundance. White sand beaches, turquoise lagoons and exquisite sunsets add to our palette of colors. Our painting odyssey begins on the island of Tahiti during Heiva, the annual festival that features stunning Polynesian dance, outrigger canoe races, arts and crafts. We tread in Gauguin's footsteps, visit the Gauguin Museum, and Papeete market. Often called the garden isle, Huahine Island retains the best of old Polynesia. Enjoy the slower pace of island life, gardens full of exotic blooms, and Tahitian style bungalows on a beautiful white sand beach. We paint daily, learn new skills, and immerse ourselves in island life. Swim, snorkel, kayak, and take an outrigger canoe excursion to a black pearl farm. Discover the nature of the poetic and spontaneous mediums of watercolor and fluid acrylic, and learn how to handle them! A full range of wet-into-wet techniques will be presented. Abstract, representational or combined approaches are encouraged to suit the individual expressive needs of each artist. Connect with your inner artist, enjoy imaginative approaches to image making, and learn how to create visually exciting paintings. All levels of skill are welcome. We believe in giving the highest standard of customer service and our values are:  Quality - Experienced French teachers who are fluent in English, are from Paris and have university degrees in teaching French as a second language.  Flexibility-  Our teachers are available between 8am and 8pm at clients homes, at unique cultural places in Paris, at client offices or at our classroom facility in the Marais.   Innovation - Highly customized private French lessons that are proven to speed French speaking and written abilities during stays in Paris.  Our founder, Marguerite Monnier started French As You Like It in 2006 after returning to France from San Francisco. She wanted to use her experience of moving to the U.S. and then back to France to help Anglophones settling and visiting Paris. French As You Like It now has seven teachers and has worked with over 500 students here in Paris.  At French As You Like It, we consider Paris our classroom. We believe people learn faster and easier if they are engaging the language through topics and locations that interest them. Each of our students has a personalized program based on their needs and level. For working professionals, we also come to offices, but again design a program around the student’s interests. For a history buff, the teacher might review irregular verbs while discussing the French revolution.  While we do use grammar books and give homework, our students have fun learning French because they are engaged by an activity or subject that interests them.  Our fees range from 45 euros to 75 euros per hour depending on your requirement, situation and program and more information about us can be found on our website www.frenchasyoulikeit.com and on our facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/French-As-You-Like-It/115835031825132

FRENCH PRIMARY CLASS AT THE RENAISSANCE SCHOOL IN OAKLAND. The Renaissance School (TRS), a private Montessori school in Oakland, California for ages 2 years old through middle school, announces it has openings in its French Primary class for children ages four and five years old, born between September 1, 2007 and August 31, 2008.  Students in the French Primary class are introduced to conversational French and are conversed with and instructed at all times in both English and French. The combined workshop and travel fee of $5,025.00 includes international airfare on Air Tahiti Nui from Los Angeles to Papeete, Tahiti; inter-island flights between Tahiti and Huahine; 9 nights accommodation (1/2 share twin); all breakfasts and 6 dinners; all transfers; 1/2 day excursion to Gauguin Museum on Tahiti and outrigger canoe excursion and visit to Pearl Farm on Huahine; daily painting classes, orientation and art party; bi-lingual leadership. July 11-20, 2014.  LES MISERABLES.  Woodminster Summer Musicals.  This international smash-hit may be the most popular musical in the world. Epic, grand and uplifting, Les Misérables packs an emotional wallop that has thrilled audiences all over the world. July 12, 2014. LUA HADAR & TWIST present C’EST MAGNIFIQUE!  To celebrate French Independence Day, Lua Hadar with Twist presents their popular French Music Hall show, C’est Magnifique! This Bastille-Day-with-a-Twist features, for the first time, the swing of Tom Bekeny’s jazz violin. Saturday, July 12 at 8pm (seating from 7pm) at Society Cabaret at the Hotel Rex Union Square, 562 Sutter Street, San Francisco. Full bar, great food.  The show presents a variety of songs from the popular traditions of Paris, including those of the influential American songwriter, Cole Porter; hence the title C’est Magnifique!, a song from Cole Porter’s 1953 musical, Can-Can.  Tom Bekeny’s Stephane Grappelli-style swing brings a gypsy jazz color to the show, in a new twist for Twist.  French songs by Charles Trenet, Maxime LeForestier, Edith Piaf and Serge Gainsbourg round out the set list, and as ever, Lua’s humorous anecdotes provide her personalized bridge to the songs, whether you speak French or not.  Since its inception in 2007, Hadar’s band TWIST has developed a reputation for twisting the style of international standards, performing original numbers and presenting songs in different languages. Lua has charmed audiences from Yoshi’s Jazz Club to Bangkok’s Thailand Cultural Center to the Swan Bar in Paris, where, on a return engagement, she previewed C’est Magnifique! to an enthusiastic full house before bringing it to San Francisco’s Society Cabaret for its first run in November 2013.  Join us at Society Cabaret at the Hotel Rex Union Square, San Francisco to celebrate Bastille Day as Lua Hadar with Twist returns to present C’est Magnifique!. Parking is available at the Sutter-Stockton garage. Seating begins at 7pm for the 8pm show. A full bar and delicious menu are available at tables during the show, for a real cabaret experience.  Lua on French and English vocals, Music Director Jason Martineau on piano, Dan Feiszli on bass, Kelly Park on drums, and featuring Tom Bekeny on jazz violin.  Tickets:  $20-45, no fees or www.societycabaret.com ; PHONE: 415-857-1896.  http://likeabridge.net/2014/05/30/twist-to-celebrate-bastille-day-with-french-swing-jazz-at-society-cabaret/

July 21-25, 2014.  FRENCH CLASS FOR PRE-SCHOOLERS AT THE ALLIANCE FRANÇAISE DE SANTA ROSA.  The Alliance Française de Santa Rosa will be offering a class for pre-schoolers (at least 4 years old). We encourage parents to accompany their children (not mandatory) since both parents and preschoolers will benefit from our instruction, and the course is taught so the parent and child can work together between classes. Learning while having fun is the key here! The course is 100% auditory, and taught with games, songs, stories and play. Please wear comfortable clothing!   The instructor is Jessica Stetson. Jessica has taught this summer class for 2 years now, and it has always been popular with parents and children. Jessica also teaches French for us at Strawberry School as part of their GATE program. She is experienced, calm and pleasant. This camp is a good way to prepare for SRFACS, because it builds a little skill and self confidence before school begins. 8 students is our maximum!  The cost is $15.00 per hour + $25.00 for membership (good for one year)  The total cost for the camp is: $112.50 (tuition) + $25.00 (membership) = $138.00.   Time: 10 to 11:30AM (90 minutes) For registration, please contact Lise Melin, lise@afsantarosa.org
