In this class you will be doing the great majority of your homework through the QUIA on-line lab manual which accompanies your text. You must have access to the web to do the homework for this class! Note that on-campus labs are available to all students, and the Language Laboratory (Stevenson 1040) gives priority to students in language classes who are doing work for those classes while there. In theory, then, students should not have any trouble accessing the lab manual on line.
Advantages to using the QUIA on-line lab manual (listening exercises) and workbook (written exercises) for Horizons:
Note that only the important "journal" exercises will be counted for your final homework grade in this class. They are marked on the syllabus as "exercices comptés" and you should make sure you do each assignment on a daily basis. They will be given a grade out of 10 pts. (Just to be clear: the journal exercises count for the homework grade in class; minutes you accrue in the lab will count toward your CR/NC grade in the lab section and also for 5% of your final grade in the course.)
So, welcome to Quia! Quia provides a fun and dynamic environment where you can complete your out-of-class work. Instead of doing your workbook with paper and pen, Quia allows you to complete your work electronically. You get instant feedback to the questions you answer in a variety of activity and game formats only Quia provides.
How to use the on-line manual of Horizons for French 102 at SSU:
1. I will distribute instructions for registering for the QUIA on-line manual in class.
Once you have registered for the on-line manual of Horizons, you use the manual as follows:
3. Click on Students.
4. Click on Log in.
Once you're logged in, you should see a screen split more or less into two parts: a purple navigation guide at left, and a larger white screen at right. There are many ways to navigate the manual, and I would recommend that you play around with the different options before getting started.
At the top of the page, you will see a gray navigation bar labeled Back Prev Page Next Page, etc. You can use this bar to scroll page by page through the manual. However, this is not the easiest way to find the exercises you're looking for!
A better way: scrolling to the chapter you're interested in in the lefthand bar and clicking on Go will take you directly to a page that allows you access either to the lab manual (listening exercises) or th workbook (written exercises). By clicking on one of these, you will arrive at a table of contents of the exercises for that chapter. We will cover approximately one section of a given chapter per class (6.1 is one section, 6.2 is the next, etc.), so you will need to complete both the oral and the written exercises for that section before the next class. I will regularly be reviewing your on-line work and pointing out common errors in class.
For example, in Chapter 6, after our first day of class on Chapter 6, you should go on-line and do:
Another way to find the exercises you need is by page. You can jump to the correct "page" by putting it in the small white box in the purple navigation bar at left and clicking on go. The manual will automatically jump to the exercise you need.
For simplicity's sake, the syllabus will list the assignments by section so you can find them easily, so you can always assume that when we are covering, say, Chapter 6, compétence 3, you can use the navigation bar to get to the table of contents for Chapter 6 (lab manual & workbook) and then you should just do all exercises (both oral and written) associated with that compétence.
Remember, I will be getting a record of all of your results (or "grades") on these exercises, so be thorough and don't forget to do the work when the work is assigned. Good luck!
