Group
Posting: Divide the following learning activities among the group
members and post answers to the following items.
1. Define inborn immunity,
acquired immunity, live attenuated vaccine, inactivated vaccines.
2.As an RN you are asked
these questions by first time parents, how would you respond? a)I
never received a chickenpox vaccine when I was young? Why should
my child receive the vaccine? b) How can I comfort my baby while
he is being vaccinated? c) Does my baby need immunizations if I
am breastfeeding?
3. Discuss the correct
sites, needle sizes, route of administration for the following vaccines:
DTP, Hepatitis B, MMR, HIB, IPV
4. Discuss an appropriate response/action for these situations:
a) A 10 month old
presents for routine immunizations with a history of lethargy, tachycardia,
fever of 104, decreased urine output.
b) A father of a 15 month old asks the nurse to give the IM vaccination
in the buttocks so his child does not have to see the needle
c) The parents of an 18month old child are fearful of the MMR vaccine,
because of their concerns about the relationship between MMR vaccine
and autism.>
5. A 5 yr old child recently
arrived from Mexico without any immunization records. The parents
want to enroll the child in school. What vaccines would this child
need to receive.

Discuss issues of risk
reduction, screening, immunizations and health education
2. As a clinic nurse, how would you manage the following situation:
15 yr old female arrives for her sports physical exam with her mother.
The patient appears withdrawn and quiet during the registration
process. The patient's mother answers all the questions directed
toward her daughter. In reading the health questionaire you notice
that there is no answer to the questions " When was your last
menstrual period (LMP)" and "Are you sexually active".
Discuss issues of confidentiality and health concerns.
