Course
Description:
Applies the caring process
to child-bearing and child-rearing families. Clinical experiences
focus on principles and concepts of health promotion and maintenance
to families in various phases of the health and illness continuum.
Prerequisites:
All 200 level nursing
major courses. Corequisite: Nursing 340 and 342

Course
Objectives:
1. Caring: Develop inter-subjective
nurturing relationships with children and families that support
the fulfillment of potentials of both client and nurse.
2. Critical Thinking:
Make informed choices through critical analysis of health care situations
involving children and families that promote nurse/client well-being.
3. Communication: Demonstrate
humanizing interactions that are grounded in the integration of
the art (subjective) and science (objective) child health nursing.
4. Advocacy: Exemplify
moral and ethical professional standards.
5. Teaching/Learning:
Develop directed and deliberate actions for self and clients intended
to result in change.
6. Professionalism: Demonstrate
professional development through commitment to intellectual awareness
and integrity in caring for children and families.

in influencing behavior guided by vision and commitment to the well
being of children, families and self.
8. Research: Optimize
evidenced based practice in the care of children and families through

Rotation
Student
Rotation This list will provide you with the information regarding
your assignment into Hospital rotations in N345.
Course
Assignments:
This clinical
course is designed to facilitate an introductory experience with
well and ill children in a variety of settings.
.The Community
experience is highly varied and dependent upon an aggressive learner
to access knowledge of professional nursing. The community assignments
will provide opportunities for individuals and groupd to participate
in clinical simulation activities. These activities will focus on
specific topics that impact the health and well-being of children
and families within the context of community.
In the hospital
settings students participate with faculty and staff to provide
nursing care to children of all ages.
Attendance
at all clinical assignments, completion of all written assignments,
completion of all on-line journal and discussion assignments, and
completion of evaluation materials is required. All policies of
the Department of Nursing Undergraduate
Handbook are observed. The HIPPA regulations
apply to all clinical activities.
Care
of Children in the Community:
45 hours of clinical practice
The Community
experience is highly varied and dependent upon an aggressive
learner to access knowledge of professional nursing. Management
of many health care problems is gradually chaing from a primary
based setting to community settings where health care is provided
in the home, day care centers, community agencies and school settings.
One of the primary reasons for these changes has been the reduced
cost and financial savings to health care insurers, including private
and government agencies. Public and private services strive to develop
optimal conditions for health promotion and prevention
A. Participate
in community assignments that promote critical thinking skils while
working both independently and in small groups.
B. Participate
in journal style weekly discussion with classmates on WebCT with
a focus the Professional Values, Core Competencies, Core Knowledge
and Role Development criteria.
1. Discussion
groups and final learning activities will be posted on-line. Students
will have opportunities to utilize varied resources to complete
these activities. Learning activities will facilitate the use of
community resources to complete these activities. (40hrs)
2. Independent
community resource observation. a) Attend a community meeting focused
on children ages 0-18.b) Observe the practice of a community pediatric
nurse or school nurse.c) Attend an educational conference related
to the health, well-being of children ages 0-18. ( 5 hrs)
3. Participate
in self-evaluation using WebCt Survey Tool.
Care
of Children in the Hospital:
45 hours of clinical practice
The Hospital
experience in caring for children and families is
available at UCSF and consists of four weekend days from 6:30AM
to 4:30PM.
Requirements:
45 hours
1. Actively
attend clinical practice opportunities (40 hours).
2. Complete
clinical data record and care plan assignments associated with direct
patient care (5 hours).
Grading
for N345
Womens
Health
- 50%
overall of N345 grade
The
Pediatric experience in N345
includes both the community and hospital rotations. Your grades
for the following assignments will be combined to contribute 50%
to your final N345 grade.
Hospital
Clinical Practice
- Hospital (25% overall of N345 grade) For students who achieve
74% (minimum passing grade for any of the N345 components) or greater
on the Clinical Evaluation Form, the percentage will be added to
the pediatric N345 grade.
Community
Clinical Practice
- Community (25% overall of N345 grade): For students who achieve
74% or greater (minimum passing grade for any of the N345 components),
the percentage will be added to the pediatric N345 grade.
Six Clinical
Simulation Activities: 15 pts each (90pts)
One Independent
Community Observation: One page write-up to be completed by
the end of the rotation. Format: Name, date of observation, site.
How this specific community resource relates to the needs of children
0-18? How does this community resource impact/advocate for the
lives of children/families? Subjective observations related to
the experience: (10pts)
