UCSF Pediatric Clinical RotationWelcome to the UCSF pediatric clinical rotation. This clinical rotation is intended to give the nursing student an opportunity to experience acute care pediatric nursing in a high level teaching institution. Each student will spend four 10-hour clinical days (on two week-ends) at UCSF in one of the acute pediatric units. For a brief orientation to the clinical experience and expectations, see clinical check lists day 1, day 2, and days 3 & 4. If time and circumstances allow, each student may be able to spend one of the four days observing in one of the specialty Pediatric Units (Neonatal ICU, Pediatric ICU, Pediatric Cardiac ICU, or Pediatric Clinical Research Center). While the rotation is brief in terms of the number of days, it is a very intense learning environment and the student should be prepared and rested for each day to maximize the opportunity for learning. The pediatric patient population at UCSF includes a mix of chronic and acute illness states that require high level nursing practice. The opportunity for clinical practicum in this institution will give the student an appreciation for both the advanced skill level required of the pediatric nurse in general acute care settings and the complexity of specialized areas of pediatric nursing practice. Also included for the student in this document are the clinical flow sheet and patient data record and care plan templates that should be completed for each clinical day (even in the specialty units) and turned in by the end of that week for grading as well as the Clinical evaluation tool that will be utilized for grading.
