at the home page of David Van Nuys. I am Professor Emeritus in the Psychology Department at Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park, California. SSU is one of the 23 campuses of the California State University system and is located 50 miles north of San Francisco. I "retired" at the end of summer 2004. However, I stayed on for the Fall 2004 semester to teach my regular classes, since they were already fully enrolled with students.
My current passion is the Shrink Rap Radio psychology podcast which I have created. It is an internet radio show that you can listen to on your computer through live streaming or that you can subscribe to in iTunes and download into your mp3 player. You will find both of these options by clicking on the link in the preceding sentence. Each episode lasts about an hour. The format is that I interview fascinating people in and around the broad world of psychology. Past interviewees have included may SSU pssychology faculty as well as such notables as Dr. Phil Zimbardo, Dr. Jonathan Haidt, Dr. Robert Altemeyer, Dr. Stanley Krippner, Dr. Charles Tart, Dr. James Pawelski, Dr. Irvin Yalom, and Dr. David Barlow, among others. Please check it out and spread the word to your friends and family!
I also have a second podcast series titled Wise Counsel in which I have interviewed a variety of eminent psychologists and psychiatrists: academics, researchers, and clinicians. Some recent guests have been Dr. Otto Kernberg on Personality Disorders, Dr. Judith Beck on Cognitive Therapy, Dr. David Barlow on anxiety disorders, Dr. Jeffrey Young on Schema Therapy, Dr. Steven C. Hayes on Commitment Acceptance Therapy (ACT), Dr. John Clarkin on Transference-Focused Therapy for Borderline Personality Disorder, Dr. Marsha Linehan on Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Dr. Myrna Weissman of Columbia University on Interpersonal Psychotherapy and Irvin Yalom, M.D. on treating death anxiety.
"Retirement" will give me more time to devote to my market research
consulting business, e-FocusGroups.
In addition, I plan to contunue co-leading workshops with my friend and former
student, Dr. Ron Alexander. In the past, we have worked together in Kauai,
Switzerland, Italy, and Mallorca, Spain. We typically combine Gestalt
process work, meditation, Hero's Journey work, Tarot, and, perhaps some Tai
Chi. I hope to team up with other friends to conduct personal growth workshops
in a variety of locales.
If you'd like to know more about me in-depth, check out a list of classes I recently taught before retiring, classes taught in the past, my resumé and/or a list of selected publications and presentations.
I am trying to learn to play the piano and also the didjeridu. I love working with people's dreams and, most recently, the Tarot..
