Toward a General Theory of Sustainable Community Development

 

Graded Assignments & Grading Criteria

 

Study/Support Groups:  Students will be organized into small study/support groups that will be responsible for discussing the readings and presentations and exchanging feedback on writing assignments.  Study/support groups will initially consist of three students who commit to meet for at least one hour outside of class.  Groups may be reorganized if interest clusters emerge out of the class process.

 

Written Components

 

Part A.  The Epistemological Foundations of Community Life

Core Reading:  E. F. Schumacher, A Guide for the Perplexed.

4 2-page Reaction Papers (CR/NC – 10%)

Part B.  Sustainable Community Economics (Complementary Economics)

Core Reading:  Mark Anielski, The Economics of Happiness.

4 2-page Reaction Papers (CR/NC – 10%)

Part C.  The Politics of Healthy Communities

Core Reading:  Suzanne Morse, Smart Communities.

4 2-page Reaction Papers (CR/NC – 10%)

 

Part A, B, C.  Term Essay (25%) Due December 2

 

Part D.  Applied Community Psychology

Assignment:  Contracted Community Action Research Project (25%)

Contract due 10/28

Oral Report due 12/2 or 12/9

Other Components

 

Attendance & Participation – 20%.  Each unexcused absence will reduce this grade by 2 grade points. (1 unexcused absence = C, 2 unexcused absences = F)

 

CR/NC Papers will generate 30% of the final grade according to the following formula:

                  12 = A                   11 = A-                 10= B                     9 = C                      <9 = F

 

All written work will be submitted in a portfolio at the end of the semester.  (Failure to submit the portfolio will result in a 1.0 grade point deduction from the calculated grade.)
