5. 38 people took a class. 12 of them got an A. What percent of the class got an A?
The fraction of the class that got an A is 12/38. When we turn this into a percent, we first turn it into a decimal by dividing the bottom into the top. We can tell that this will not be a terminating decimal because when we reduce it to lowest terms, we get 6/19, and 19 is a prime which is different than 2 or 5. When turning a nonterminating decimal into a percent, the following technique is commonly used. Since when we turn the decimal into a percent, we reverse the process from the last problem and move the decimal point two places to the right. Move the decimal in the division problem 2 places to the right before doing the divison.
