SONOMA STATE UNIVERSITY

ETHNOGRAPHIC FIELD SCHOOL--BELIZE

ANTH 454

June 5 - July 2, 2005

Instructor: Dr. John D. Wingard

Belize is located on the Caribbean Coast of Central America.

Belize=s ecological resources range from a barrier reef second only to Australia=s Great Barrier Reef in size to tropical forests home to exotic animals and Classic Maya pyramids.  Most visitors come to enjoy the Caribbean pleasures.  The government of Belize, however, has invested millions of dollars in developing other areas of the country for tourism as well.

Much of this development has been focused in Belize=s western region with its diverse natural environment and Mayan archaeological sites.  While much effort has been focused on developing the tourist potential of this region, relatively little has been done to understand the social characteristics of the tourism industry itself and its impacts on the local culture.

This field school will focus on developing a better understanding of the peoples and cultures of the city of San Ignacio and the Cayo region of western Belize, including the impacts of the growing tourist industry.

The field school will run from June 5, 2005 to July 2, 2005.

Participants will receive intensive instruction in ethnographic field

methods and will carry out an instructor-approved ethnographic

research project.  Participants earn 4 credit hours upon

completion of the final report.
