Commencement is a special day when our students celebrate their achievements with friends and family. The success of the day depends entirely on the teamwork of SSU employees; those people who interact and support students throughout their years with us. Anne Frank saplingAnne Frank Sapling to be Planted at Holocaust Grove, April 14

The courage and inspiration of Anne Frank will be honored in mid-April as SSU plans to plant the sapling taken from the mother chestnut tree that often gave Frank hope as she hid from the Nazis in World War II. SSU is one of only 11 recipients of the Anne Frank tree saplings in the United States. They are all being planted in public dedications this year.

The campus community is invited to the planting ceremony at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 14 at the Erna and Arthur Salm Holocaust & Genocide Memorial Grove near the campus lakes. A reception follows in the Commons at 2 p.m. Tours of the Grove where the sapling is planted will be offered beginning April 22. Continue Reading 'Anne Frank Sapling...'

Faculty ResearchBring Your Students to Cornell West Lecture

Dr. Cornel West will be speaking at Weill Hall at the Green Music Center at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 11 as part of the Andrea Neves/Bart Evans Social Justice Lecture Series. The series is run in collaboration with On Campus Productions and the Schools of Education and Social Sciences.The first 600 tickets are free to SSU students and are available at the Student Union box office for $20.

Faculty are encouraged to consider making this event a part of their classes. Those intersted in inviting or requiring their students to attend this inspiring and challenging lecture can have access to a limited number of free tickets available for faculty bringing classes. SSU's seventh annual Graduate Student Research Showcase will be held on Tuesday, April 9, from 4:30 - 7 p.m., in the Commons. Sometime last year, eight intrepid SSU staff explorers launched off at the SSU Ropes Course between the Rec Center and Darwin Hall. Suicide Prevention Training Still Open

A final suicide prevention training is being offered for Spring 2013 on April 16 from noon-1 p.m. in Schulz 3001. To register for this in-person QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) gatekeeper training, call Amber Crane at CAPS (4-2153) or e-mail cranea@sonoma.edu at least one week in advance of the workshop.If you can’t attend an in-person QPR training, take Kognito’s interactive At-Risk For University & College Faculty. This on-line training program teaches you to identify, approach and refer students experiencing psychological distress, including depression and suicidal ideation. Angeles Arrien Returns to Discuss " The Way of the Teacher"

Angeles Arrien has come to the campus over the past six months to present workshops on three of the four archetypes in the Four Fold Way. In the final workshop on April 10 from 4-6 p.m. in the HUB, she’ll explore The Way of the Teacher, which represents the human capacity for Wisdom and addresses the challenge of facing the unknown, developing trust, and utilizing the human resource of silence to tap into inner wisdom. Free Safe Medicine Disposal Bin in Student Health Center

A free safe medicine disposal project is being during the month of April in the Student Health Center lobby. The campus community is invited to drop off unused and outdated drugs instead of disposing them in the toilet or trash which pollutes waterways in landfills and eventually enters the drinking water and food chain. Bring the prescription and over-the-counter drugs, but not the containers, in plastic Ziploc bags and drop them off in the collection bin in the SHC lobby. Closing Dates for Fiscal Year 2012/2013

As you know, June 30, 2013 marks the end of fiscal year 2012/2013. Financial Services conducts numerous year end related activities from May 1 through August 31 to comply with financial reporting requirements established by the California State Controller, Department of Finance and the CSU Chancellor’s Office.
