Communication & Media Studies
Welcome to COMS!
Are you considering a rewarding career in the media industry? Our department offers small media-focused classes, experienced professors and a hands-on learning experience. Our classes cross over a diverse range of topics which allow students to be knowledgable in many aspects of the communications field.
What's new in COMS?
The Spring 2015 semester brought some prestigious honors to students in the Communication and Media Studies department.
Alex Bretow, general manager of the department’s student-run SSU-TV, was selected along with his film partner Mary-Madison Baldo to have two of their short films shown at the Cannes Film Festival in May. Their films “Snake Eyes” and “Rampage” were two of only 26 student films selected from thousands of entries. The films were accepted to the Cannes Short Film Corner through the nationwide Campus Movie Fest competition.
“It’s truly an honor to represent Sonoma State, the bay area, and our (film) company at the largest stage in the world,” Bretow said. Bretow and Baldo will be traveling to Cannes following a successful fundraising effort.
Meanwhile, two other COMS students were honored with scholarships. Emily Hill and Dylan Sirdofsky received the awards from the San Francisco Public Relations Roundtable at a luncheon in the city. Hill and Sirdofsky were among only five scholarship winners. The competition was open to both full and part-time students throughout the bay area. Applicants had to be on a degree course in a communications-related field, have a minimum 3.5 GPA, and demonstrate in interest in PR through coursework or internships.
Fall 2015 schedule is now availble on line and to the left <<< under courses and requirements.
