Student Retention Policy
The Department of Counseling has the responsibility for evaluating the appropriateness of students to become counselors. In addition to maintaining university-wide academic standards for graduate students (e.g., minimum grade point) and University-wide regulations regarding conduct (Sections 41301-41304, Article 1.1, Title 5, California Code of Regulations), the Department is also concerned with professional standards regarding counseling trainees, such as those outlined in APA, ACA, ASCA ethical standards and mandated by respective governing board (BBS,CTC), etc. Thus, the Department has developed the following counseling-related criteria for student retention:
- Students must demonstrate general and specific counseling skills as defined by the Department's objectives for 510A/B. Depending on faculty assessment of counseling skills, the recommendation of the faculty may include the following alternatives:
- Credit in 510A and approval to enroll in 510B. Similarly, credit may be given in 510B with approval to enroll in 514A/B.
- Credit in 510A with approval to enroll in 510B contingent upon completion of additional faculty recommendations (e.g., further course-work, personal therapy, more counseling experience, etc.). Similarly, credit may be given in 510B with approval to enroll in 514A/B depending upon contingencies to be fulfilled.
- No credit in 510A, but the student is permitted to re-enroll in 510A, which may also entail completion of additional faculty recommendations. Similarly, no credit may be given in 510B, but the student is advised to take the practicum seminar over again with possible further contingencies to be fulfilled.
- No credit in 510A; student is dropped from the program. Similarly, no credit is given in 510B, and the student is dropped from the program.
- If issues arise in other areas of the program which the faculty assesses as significantly affecting the student’s ability to function adequately as a counselor, graduate student, and professional, evaluation of those issues by the counseling department faculty may lead to specific recommendations for the students, including potential removal from the program.
