As professor of ethnomusicology at Sonoma State University from 1974-2014, Laxmi Ganesh Tewari has undertaken extensive fieldwork in India, Turkey, Trinidad and Tobago, Thailand, Fiji, Ghana and Zimbabwe. His book Music of the Indian Diaspora in Trinidad chronicles the oral traditions of the descendants of indentured Indian laborers in Trinidad. A leader in the ancient the Gwalior tradition of vocal music, Dr. Tewari received extensive training in Hindustani classical vocal music at Banaras Hindu University, under the guidance of renowned Indian artists Dr. Lalmani Misra, Pandit Madhav Vaman Thakar, and Professor B. R. Deodhar. He completed his Doctor of Music degree in 1967. He has been honored with an Outstanding Professor Award, a Meritorious Performance and Professional Achievement Award, and the Friends of the Library Faculty Award.
Tewari continues to perform at Sonoma State University with his ensemble of tabla, tambura and harmonium players from the Bay area. His singing is available on the Alam-Madina label (Laxmi G. Tewari: Master Indian Classical Vocalist), as well as on the compact discs Morning Glory and Bhajan and A Rainbow of Devotional Songs.
