The ethnomusicology component in the music department gives students an opportunity to experience music from around the world in the context of culture and religion. Students explore sociological implications and performance practices in the music cultures studied.
The primary ensemble in this program area is the Indian Singing Ensemble.
Experience the joy of Indian Singing and explore the philosophical and spiritual concept of Nada Brahma (the universe is sound; music being eternal bliss).
Students are encouraged to engage in learning to perform different musical traditions. The program will help locate an institution or a teacher in the Bay Area with whom students can learn instruments of their choice and receive credit toward their degree. A written plan from the student is required and must be approved by the director of the program.
