Mahon Creek originates in the hills above Tamalpais Cemetery in San Anselmo, California in Marin County and flows through residential, urban and industrialized areas of the City of San Rafael before it joins with another small stream. South of this point, the waters become the channelized San Rafael Canal with significant tidal influence. At Pickelweed Park in the Canal District of San Rafael, Mahon Creek empties into San Francisco Bay. We chose six sampling sites (see yellow dots for recording stations on map below) along Mahon Creek where Sonoma State University undergraduates and Redwood High School students investigated a variety of biological and ecological parameters.
