University Center Comments and Responses

1. This description is too general regarding the proposed Master Plan Revision and its impact on the campus.

  • Response: What additional information would be useful?

2. The sciences, and in particular the physical sciences, need more space than what Darwin can provide. A number of years ago we almost had a physical science building through the process of approval. The original idea was to hook up to Darwin from the south. The University Center could be in the way of future academic growth. I am afraid that non-academics are becoming more important than academics in planning.

3. Need to consider the effect of having to relocate the Recycling Program's staging area.

4. Need to consider where ALL the offices and occupants of the Village and AFC complexes would go, especially in terms of ease of access for the student, employee and other customers of the offices now located there.

5. Although strongly in favor of the University Center and its proposed location -- in close proximity to student housing and with easy access for students and employees living off campus as well as visitors to campus -- VERY concerned about the impact of traffic flow from E. Cotati Ave. to South Sequoia and then onto Redwood Circle. Also impacts on parking in Lots J and F.

6. Chairs of the Natural Sciences are extremely apprehensive about the proposed location of the University Center. They have just signed a letter to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs expressing concern that the proposed location of the University Center south of Darwin Hall will preclude expansion of SSU's science facilities into the only available space. If there is no alternative plan for a new science building elsewhere, they find the proposed location of the University Center unacceptable. They have offered to provide constructive input into suggesting alternatives. (See comments regarding the proposed New Classroom/Laboratory/Office Facilities, and the timing of their construction.)

7. Phil Northen, Chair of the Biology Department, comments that his department is in need of research space for new faculty, and remodeling of Darwin may not fully meet their needs. He adds that the concern that all Natural Sciences chairs have expressed about how the location of the University Center would prohibit development of new science facilities south of Darwin is particularly true for his department.

8. Constructing the University Center on the proposed site would require removal of the greenhouses south of Darwin Hall. These greenhouses are used for both instructional and research purposes. Any plan for use of the space the greenhouses currently occupy should also include a plan for what to do with the greenhouses.

9. There is an animal house across from the greenhouses south of Darwin Hall that is on the site of the proposed University Center. Its currently use is storage, but it may become a research space.

10. The Power Plant will not be moved, but the Village will.

a. Where will the Village be moved?

11. Aesthetically, we will have two concert bunkers in a row facing a federal collegiate Learning Center, and you suggest a Conocti Harbor Inn structure as a complement.

a. Justify the dissonance in design.
b. What type of landscape design do you plan to integrate the sites?

12. What will become of the existing buildings that currently house the services that will be moving into the University center?

13. Where will the offices and classrooms currently in the Village (south of Darwin) go?

14. I heard a rumor that the greenhouses were going to be torn down for this project. If this is true, it is a big mistake! Please just build around the green houses. I'm sure this can be done in an appealing manner.
