About the Language & Culture Learning Center

Welcome to the Language and Culture Learning Center, aka the (LC)2 , at Sonoma State University. The Center has three physical components: an Audio Facility located in Stevenson 1028, the Modern Languages & Literatures Faculty Resource Space next door in Stevenson 1032 , and the Multimedia/Computer Facility located down the hall in Stevenson 1040. The Center is intended to support students and faculty in the learning and teaching of language and culture at Sonoma State University (SSU). In particular, the Center strives to contribute to the atmosphere of cooperation and collaboration between Instructional Technology Services (ITS) and faculty in order to foster and facilitate creative and appropriate uses of technology designed to enhance the learning and teaching experience for students and faculty. The Center has the goal of being a place of information and inspiration for the teaching and learning of language and culture. While the Center focuses on serving students and faculty at SSU, this web site is also intended for interested members of the larger community of language learners and teachers both inside and outside Sonoma State University by providing connections to research and information on language and culture in the world.

Why We Changed Our Name

In moving beyond the traditional “language lab” model , the Language and Culture Learning Center is dedicated to Sonoma State University’s liberal arts mission of graduating students who have the ability to think critically and ethically and can effectively use information technologies. Reflecting SSU’s membership in the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC), the Language and Culture Learning Center is committed to experimenting with and critically evaluating its practices in order to become ever better at its focused educational mission (COPLAC Prospectus, pg. 3). Consistent with SSU’s recognition of cultural diversity and intellectual diversity as integral to its educational program (COPLAC Prospectus, pg. 2), the Language and Culture Learning Center recognizes that language is more than words, it is a way of being in the world, and language learning ultimately involves understanding the world through the lens of other ways of seeing, feeling, hearing and communicating.
