Faculty Instructional Services

The Language and Culture Learning Center is dedicated to facilitating the integration of technology into the pedagogical practices of faculty in the Department of Modern Languages & Literatures at SSU. As a site of coordination, the Center links services between ITS, (LC)2 and faculty. As a center of collaboration, the Center has a consulting function to work collaboratively with faculty in the use of educational technologies and the development of projects, activities, and materials using those technologies. Faculty are particularly encouraged to consult the IT Instructional Tools and Resources page for an overview of what technologies are currently available at SSU and for training in using them.

The Faculty Resource Space

Located in Stevenson 1032, the FRS is also available for use by faculty in the Department of Modern Languages & Literatures. If you have a particular project in mind, please submit the online Faculty Project form. As a place of information and inspiration for teaching and learning, the Center has a resource function In order to provide faculty with recent research in language pedagogy, applied linguistics, second-language acquisition (SLA), and educational technology, copies of selected articles and reports in these areas are available in the Faculty Resource Space upon request. Materials can be checked out for 1 week or can be duplicated (please allow 3 days). Please contact Robert.Train@sonoma.edu regarding the use of these materials.

In keeping with its mission to foster appropriate and creative uses of technology, the Language and Culture Learning Center encourages Modern Language & Literatures faculty to consult with the Director (Robert.Train@sonoma.edu) and IT in expanding the uses of the Stevenson 1040 Multimedia/Computer Facility.

Audio Tape Duplication (in Stevenson 1028)

We can duplicate non-copyrighted material (e.g. your own voice) or copyrighted material for which we have duplication privileges (e.g. cassettes that accompany texts that we use). The lab has 1 high-speed duplicating machine.

Duplicating Textbook Cassette Programs

Allow several weeks to make copies of entire textbook cassette programs. The lab will furnish the blank tapes.

Duplicating Other Cassette Tapes

If you want to distribute tapes to your students for their own use (as opposed to simply keeping copies in the lab), they must provide the blank tapes. The blank tapes must be new 60 minute tapes (available in the SSU bookstore). The master tape that you provide must also be on a 60 minute tape, clearly labeled, and recorded on only one side (if you have more than 30 minutes of audio, it needs to be on 2 separate tapes). Allow AT LEAST 72 hours (3 days) to make the copies, and please fill out a service request available through the Director (Robert.Train@sonoma.edu) or the lab staff (lang.culture@sonoma.edu) .

Video Viewing

Faculty are discouraged from using the Stevenson 1040 facility for video projection because the space is designed for multimedia/computer use. For video viewing, there are 3 group viewing rooms in the Multimedia Center located in the University Library.
