Audio & Video

The Language and Culture Learning Center is dedicated to serving students enrolled in language courses at Sonoma State University. The Audio Facility in Stevenson 1028 provides audio tape playback services. Duplication of materials is limited to the audio programs provided by the textbook publishers. All other copyright material cannot be duplicated with out written permission from the copyright holder.

For video playback, Stevenson 1028 has 2 viewing stations with multisystem video tape player, monitor, and headphones. You are welcome to consult in Stevenson 1028 the binder containing a list and description of all foreign language videos currently available at SSU. However, the foreign language video collection is housed in the Multimedia Center located on the second floor of the University Library. It is recommended that students use the Multimedia Center for video viewing.

Computer Facility

The Modern Language Multimedia/Computer Facility is located in Stevenson 1040. The computer lab is used for language classes as well as open hours, with priority given to students working on coursework in Modern Languages. Schedules show when the labs are reserved for classes or other activities. The schedule is also posted by the door of 1040. Students wishing to use the computers in the Stevenson 1040 may check out a headphone by leaving their current SSU ID card with the lab assistant in Stevenson 1028. There are currently 17 stereo headphones with microphones available on a first-come, first-served basis. Headphones will not be loaned for over-night use. Borrowers will be held responsible any damage to or loss of headphones. An information sheet on the use of these headphones is available in STEV 1028.

Accents

You may also obtain (either in STEV 1028 or online) an information sheet on producing German, French, and Spanish accents and symbols using shortcut keys in Microsoft Word. You will need a copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader to open this sheet.

Student Facilitators

Our staff includes speakers of Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, French and Arabic. If you are having trouble with one of those languages, just ask the staff assistant or the director if he or she can help you. In addition to our helpful (LC)2 staff, Sonoma State University also provides free tutoring by experienced tutors for a wide variety of SSU undergraduate courses, including Foreign Language Conversation Groups. Also, see the Student Language Facilitator Schedule.

Requirements

Students enrolled in lab courses (as designated by “L” after the course number; for example, Spanish 101 L) are expected to spend approximately 100 minutes per week in the Language & Culture Learning Center. See your instructor for the exact requirements.

Procedures

In the beginning weeks of the semester, should come to Stevenson 1028 and fill out a time card (color coded by language) with the following information:

  • Last Name/First Name
  • Course name, number, and section (e.g., Japanese 101 section 1)
  • Instructor’s name

Remember, this is your language center!

Please treat all equipment and materials (tapes, recorders, headphones, furniture, etc.) with respect and care. Due to severe budget restrictions, we have very little money to repair equipment and even less to replace it. A few simple practices will greatly reduce the risk of damage:

  • Be gentle inserting the tapes into the recorders, excessive force may damage the machines and the tapes.
  • Use a soft touch on the recorder key pads, they will work better and last longer.
  • When you are done using the audio equipment, please place your headphones on the desk. Please DO NOT hang them on the side of the listening cubicle (the sides of the cubicle tend to wear away the headphone cushions).

If you encounter any difficulties, please do not take it out on the equipment. Just ask the Student Assistant on duty or the Director for help, it is their job to assist you. Thank you.
