ResNet Network Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What connection speed does the SSU ResNet have to the internet?
A: The entire residential community shares a 30Mbps connection to the internet.
Q: Is the available bandwidth for Peer to Peer traffic limited?
A: We do not block Peer to Peer traffic, but we also do not guarantee any bandwidth for this service.
Please be aware that it is illegal to download and/or share copyrighted material without permission of the owner. This may include, but is not limited to, mp3's, video, and picture files. If a complaint is received due to copyright violation, your network access may be shut off and disciplinary actions may be taken. Please visit the University of Chicago's website on Disabling Peer to Peer File Sharing for instructions on how to keep people from downloading files from your computer using common Peer to Peer applications.
Q: Does some traffic have higher priority then others?
A: Yes, this is done so that e-mail, web pages, and student registration are not impacted by Peer to Peer traffic, online games, and other non-essential network traffic.
Q: Why can't I host my own server from the Residential Network?
A: The purpose of the Residential Network is to provide network access to e-mail, Sonoma State Administrative and Academic Online Services, and the internet for academic research. Servers serving clients outside of the Residential network will use up both incoming and outgoing bandwidth and take away from the total bandwidth available to the entire Residential Network. (If you feel you have a justifiable reason to host a server on the Residential Network see the Servers on the Housing Network policy.)
Q: Why should I install anti-virus software?
A: Viruses can be spread in many ways and can affect not only your computer,
but the computers of people in your e-mail address book, as well as the
rest of the people on the network. With anti-virus software, you can check
for viruses when downloading files from the internet or checking email.
Anti-virus software can also scan your computer to check for viruses.
If your computer gets a virus which starts spreading to other campus users
through email or over the network, it may be necessary to shut down your
network connection until the virus has been removed from your computer.
