Internship Description

Job Title: Hotline Advocate

Compensation: unpaid (see Additional Information)
Internship Length: Prefer 9 month commitment – but will work w/individual schedules
Hours Per Week: 4-8 hours per week

Population: Adolescents, Adults, children, multicultural, seniors
Focus: Crisis Intervention, Domestic Violence, Education, Homeless , Outreach
Setting: Domestic Violence confidential shelter

Duties: Answer 24-hour hotline (English or Spanish) 4-hour shift once a week. Provide crisis intervention, advocacy, support, referrals/information and/or domestic violence education to callers. Retrieve messages from Domestic Violence Outreach line and provide outreach, crisis intervention, support, and information to victims of domestic violence. Refer and make appointment to a Community Advocacy Program Advocate for victims of domestic violence wanting retraining orders or other legal actions.

Qualifications: Complete 40-hour domestic violence training (to volunteer, intern, or work in a shelter or hotline for victims of domestic violence, a 40-hour training course is required by the State of California per California Evidence Code Section 1037.1).

Additional Information: Students who complete the required 40-hour training and 96 hours in the hotline will become certified domestic violence counselors.
