MATH ColloquiumCall for M*A*T*H Colloquium Speakers

The M*A*T*H Colloquium is looking for individuals who use math or statistics in their job or research, and who would be willing to give a 50-minute talk about the mathematics that they do. Speakers are needed for the sr ping semester. Colloquiums are held on Wednesdays from 4 p.m.-5 p.m. in Darwin 103. "We would be glad to take you out for dinner after your talk," says Cora Neal, professor of mathematics. For those who are interested, email Cora Neal at cora.neal@sonoma.edu.

BreakfastHalf-Priced Breakfast, Every Day

There's a new twist to the half-priced meal deal at the Zinfandel Dining Room: beginning Mon., Oct. 5 and lasting through Fri., Oct. 30, all weekday breakfasts are half-priced for faculty and staff (Fri., Oct. 2 is the last half-priced lunch deal).

Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., employees with their SSU ID receive breakfast for the discounted price of just $3.50. Breakfast is served with a mixture of hot items, fresh fruit, cereal and even pancakes. Check out the upcoming menus at the Dining Services website.

The Butterfly Garden, established in 1993 by recently-retired lead gardener Karen Tillinghast, will soon feature a bright, new sign. The graphic above has been approved for installation by Facilities Management. The sign features information about three butterfly habitats—Woodland, Meadow and Riparian—as well as colorful photographs of butterflies and their host larval plants.

Get in Touch With Nature at Fairfield Osborn Preserve

Fairfield Osborn PreserveGuided hikes at SSU's beautiful, 411-acre Fairfield Osborn Preserve take place every Saturday, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., from Oct. 24 until Dec. 5. Trained naturalists will lead groups into the amazingly diverse heart of the preserve located on Sonoma Mountain.

Curiosity-driven exploration and stories uncover the unusual geology of the area, its violent origins and unique plants and animals. Hikers might see a Pacific Giant Salamander or a Pacific Treefrog, hear the wind rustling through the oaks and beautiful grasses, or smell the sweet fragrance of the hayfield tarweed - one of the most unique (and uniquely Californian) smells in the world.

Sign-up is not required—simply show up to meet one of guides at 10 a.m. on a Saturday from Oct. 24 to Dec. 5 with a lunch, water and walking boots. A donation of $3 per person is requested.
