Jack London Awards for Excellence in Education to be Given

ROHNERT PARK - The Jack London Excellence in Education Awards are given annually to classroom teachers coordinating exemplary educational programs in Sonoma County public schools. Programs coordinated by school administrators or community representatives are eligible for the Jack London Special Award for Community-School Cooperation.

Awards will be presented at a reception in the Sonoma State University Art Gallery on Wednesday, May 13, 1998, 4:00-5:30 p.m. The event is open to the public.

Goals of the Jack London Award Program: To recognize and publicize outstanding programs and the individuals responsible for them, to assist in projecting a positive image for public education, and to promote a positive relationship between Sonoma State University and public K-12 education.

SSU faculty and staff, as well as community and educational leaders serve as judges for this award program. Final selection of award recipients is made by the Jack London Award Committee. Criteria for judging include: Clear and consistent goals derived from research and reflective experiences; direct relationships between program goals and methods; measurable student outcomes: (a) methods of assessment (b) results; positive impact on students: (a) effect on current students and (b) of continued student interest; novel and creative approaches; communication to parents, as well as coordination with other subject areas and grade levels; teacher responsibility, commitment, empowerment and collegiality; teamwork among program staff; adaptability to other schools; and school/district program evaluation.
