Jean and Charles Schulz Information Center Groundbreaking Scheduled

ROHNERT PARK - Snoopy will be there. So will his creator, Charles Schulz, and Schulz' wife Jean, who donated $5 million to help support a new high-tech library and information center at Sonoma State University. The groundbreaking ceremony takes place on Friday, May 8 from 10:30 to approximately 11:30 a.m. in the Darwin/Stevenson Quad on campus.

The public is encouraged to attend.

To honor the Schulz' generosity, the building has been named the Jean and Charles Schulz Information Center. Construction begins this summer; it will be completed by the turn of the century.

In addition to festivities, freshments and the traditional "breaking ground" with a golden shovel, university President Ruben Armi-ana will give a short introduction and welcome.

Special guest speaker is new California State University Chancellor Dr. Charles Reed. Reed makes his first visit to the Sonoma campus since his job with the CSU began in March.

Fund Raiser
Copperfield's Books is sponsoring their second Evening at Copperfield's that will net Sonoma State University 20% of all sales from 5-9 p.m. on May 8. The money will benefit the Jean and Charles Schulz Information Center. The fund raising event is valid at the Montgomery Village store only (2316 Montgomery Drive, Santa Rosa, 578-8938.)

The SSU Information Center, which will be built and occupied by the year 2000, will serve as a prototype for a new kind of library. It will combine traditional library services with virtual electronic space in a highly usable and flexible design, including an electronic retrieval system which will search out and deliver books to users in 2-4 minutes. The Information Center is being called the "library without walls" since it will deliver networked information, such as the Internet and electronic databases, to the campus and much of the community, including county K-12 schools.
