Free bus rides offered to SSU campus community

Through December 24, students, faculty and staff looking for a very unique deal need look no further. This semester Sonoma County Transit (SCT) is offering free bus rides to every Sonoma State University student, faculty and staff member. And there are no strings, no tricks, and no hidden costs. All that is needed is a current SSU ID card (current means that it has a Fall 1998 sticker).

The program is being paid for though Sonoma County Transit in an effort to clean the air, reduce traffic and assist SSU which, due to construction, will face some challenges in regard to traffic and parking. The Bay Area Air Quality Management District has approved the cost of the free bus rides program at Sonoma State University for Fall '98.

The free rides program does not include rides originating with Santa Rosa City or Petaluma Transit City buses, but is valid with all SCT routes at all times, countywide. Riders may go to Petaluma, Cotati, Rohnert Park, Santa Rosa, Healdsburg, the Russian River Area, Sebastopol, Guerneville, Monte Rio, Sonoma, Windsor, Forestville and the Sonoma County Airport. Two express routes are in place from Santa Rosa and Sebastopol to and from SSU. Traveling to San Francisco is easy when riders transfer from Sonoma County Transit to Golden Gate Transit. There's also late night service to and from SSU.

Anne Daniel, public relations manager for SCT, will be on hand at the Commuter Students Reception on Thursday, August 27 at noon in the main campus quad to answer questions and give away free gifts. The event, which lasts from noon to 1 p.m, features refreshments and live music by The Girl and I. Look for the 40' bus in the quad.

On Friday, August 28, Daniel again brings a 40' bus on campus, this time to "Friday Fest" which is being held in the residence hall area, at the Laura Gale Field. There will be kickball, volleyball and other activities and games. A pool party and food fair round out the afternoon. Again, Daniel will hand out free gifts.

The bus stop at SSU is at the Information Booth near the main entrance to the university. Schedules are available at the Information Booth the Student Union, and locations throughout campus. For more information call 576-7433 or 1 (800) 345-7433.
