"Friends of the Library" Award Presentation

On October 15 the Sonoma State University Friends of the Ruben Salazar Library will present their annual "Faculty Award" to Associate Professor Edward Castillo of Sonoma State University. The award will be given in the University Art Gallery at Sonoma State University at 4:00 p.m. Everyone in the community is invited to attend. Food and beverages will be served. A parking fee of $1.50 is required in all campus lots.

The award recognizes Castillo's outstanding service and contributions to his profession, community, and publishing regarding his work in Native American studies. His work has been published in many articles and currently has four books published, including his most recent Indians, Franciscans, and Spanish Missionization, published by the University of New Mexico. Castillo's work has helped reform the teaching curriculum at elementary level history, particularly regarding the portrayal of Native Americans. Currently he is working on promoting the Indian Gaming Commission in respect to Prop. 5, and with the local Pomo Coast Miwak tribe. Castillo said that "the award is a reflection of how well I've been treated by the University both personally and professionally. This award is an honor and will make me work harder."

Friends of the Library is an organization which funds this award through its selling of donated books. Recipients of this award are given $500, which is directed to the purpose of buying textbooks. The organization also helps with the funding of libraries and has for the past fifteen years. For more information, call J.J. Wilson at (707) 664-2880.
