Project Censored Releases Top 25 Undercovered Stories

Bruce Brugmann, editor and publisher of the San Francisco Bay Guardian serves as keynote speaker at Project Censored's release of the Top 25 Censored News Stories of 1999. The event takes place on March 29 at 7 p.m. in the Evert B. Person Theatre at Sonoma State University. Tickets for the event ($6 general admission, $4 students) are available by calling (707) 664-2500 or at the door as seating permits.

The primary objective of Project Censored is to explore the extent of censorship in society by locating stories about significant issues of which the public should be aware, but is not, for one reason or another. The project hopes to stimulate journalists to provide more mass media coverage of those issues and to encourage the public to demand that coverage.

This year's top stories include health, environment, military and labor issues as well as those of foreign policy and international corporate abuse. This year there are a number of stories on the mainstream media's tendency to place emphasis on particular perspectives of news stories to enhance their entertainment value.

Bob Tellander, professor of sociology at SSU will serve as emcee for the event and SSU students who researched the stories will present them.
In addition to presentation of the Top 25, the book Censored 2000: The News that Didn't Make the News will be available for $17.95. Censored 2000 is also available in bookstores or by calling (707) 664-2500. The book features a line-up of media scholars and guest writers including Robin Anderson, Dennis Bernstein, Janine Jackson, Mumia Abu Jamal, Carl Jensen, Charles Klotzer, Nancy Kranich, Justin Lewis, Robert McChesney, Michael Parenti, Danny Schechter, and Normon Solomon.
