Brown University and MCI WorldCom announced that Sonoma State University has been granted $200,000 in the "Making a Civic Investment" program. Of the 169 applicants nationwide, SSU was one of 20 in the nation chosen to receive $40,000 a year for the next five years. SSU will work with Mare Island Technology (MIT) Academy, a charter middle school in Vallejo, California to integrate technology and community service into a rigorous academic curriculum.
"This is an exciting opportunity. The curriculum produced will build students into active learners, not just passive recipients of information," says Lynne Vaughan, project coordinator for SSU. Sonoma State University will partner with the Institute for Computer Technology in Sunnyvale, California, providing support for MIT academy. The Institute and SSU already work in collaboration on a major project funded by the U.S. Department of Education upgrading teacher technology preparation. Representatives of Sonoma State University and Mare Island Technology (MIT) Academy will attend an Institute for Grantees at Brown University, Rhode Island, in August.
The project also provides teaching candidates from Sonoma State University with Americorps opportunities at MIT Academy.
