ROHNERT PARK -- Sonoma State University students passed a referendum last week in favor of building a new $15.2 million student recreation center and levied an increase in student fees to pay for it.
The 52,000 sq. ft. center will be adjacent to the campus residence halls. It will house a weight room, two multipurpose rooms for dance/aerobics/martial arts, a game room, an indoor rock-climbing wall and a massage center, as well as many other amenities. Students will have free access to the facility. Faculty, staff and alumni will have access through the purchase of a membership.
The referendum will increase the Student Union fee by $80 per semester in the 2002-2003 school year and by $95 per semester (an additional $15 per semester) from 2003-on. The center is scheduled to open in fall 2003. Construction is scheduled to begin July of 2002.
"The new Student Recreation Center will provide more student life and activity for SSU students," says Pam Su, Recreational Sports Coordinator. "With the recent 70% increase in on-campus housing, we now have almost 2,000 residents. I'm excited about being able to provide so many more healthy, positive, fun and active options for all students." The center will also create 50 new student positions in order to support the operations of the center.
The vote took place Wednesday and Thursday, November 15 and 16, on campus. The referendum passed with a 56 percent yes vote. There was a 25 percent voter turnout of the total student population of 7,404.
A model of the facility can be viewed at the SSU Student Union.
