General Education Requirements Overview

Each baccalaureate candidate must complete a University-approved University-wide Option or the Hutchins Interdisciplinary Option.

For more information, contact your departmental advisor.

The University-Wide Option requires courses distributed among the following categories:

A. Communication and Critical Thinking

B. Natural Sciences and Mathematics

C. Arts and Humanities

D. Social Sciences

E. Integrated Person

Within these categories, one course in Ethnic Studies GE course is required. At least nine (9) General Education units must be earned in residence at Sonoma. In addition, at least nine (9) units of General Education must be in upper-division (300- and 400-level) courses and shall be taken no sooner than the term in which upper-division standing (completion of 60 semester units) is attained.
Two approved University-Wide General Education Options are:
  • if your catalog year is from Fall 1990 to the present, or
  • if you transferred to Sonoma Spring 1996 or later with a minimum of 30 transferable units completed, and a catalog year of 1981 to the present.

For students with catalog years from Fall 1990 to the present using the 51-unit pattern:

  A: Communication and Critical Thinking B: Natural Science and Mathematics C: Humanities D: Social Sciences E: The Integrated Person
1 Written and Oral Analysis Physical Science Fine Arts Individual & Society Integrated Person
2 Fundamentals of Communication Biological Science World Literature World History and Civilization  
3 Critical Thinking Science Emphasis Philosophy and Values United States History  
4   Math Concepts Comparative Perspectives andLanguage Constitution: State and Local  
5       Contemporary International Perspectives  
  • An Ethnic Studies GE course is required, chosen from the Depts of AMCS, CALS, ENGL, NAMS, and WGS.
  • At least 9 units of GE must be earned in residence at Sonoma State.
  • At least 9 units of GE must be in upper-division (300-400) courses
    • which shall be taken no sooner than the term in which upper-division standing (completion of 60 semester units) is attained;
    • which must represent two of the four areas (B through E).
  • A laboratory course is required in the sciences.
