FR: Gerald L. Jones, Vice President for Student Affairs

Dear Campus Community:

On Saturday, May 27, 2023, the Sonoma State community lost a beloved member, Calee Spinney. She passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends.

Calee was best known for her contagious smile and her passion for our students. She made everyone feel like they were at home in her presence. She began at Sonoma State University as an Area Coordinator in Residential Life Programs in Summer 2017 until she moved into a position that amplified her innate ability to care for others as the Division of Student Affairs’ Care Team Coordinator. Even in the face of her own health challenges, Calee selflessly provided support to our most vulnerable students.

A Celebration of Life event will be held on Sunday, June 4 at 1:30 p.m. in Cabernet Village in our residential community. All are welcome.

Please remember that we all process loss in different ways. We ask that you extend compassion and grace to those who may need extra support during this difficult time. For those in need of assistance in processing this loss, please seek out the following resources:

CAPS - Counseling and Psychological Services
CAPS offers 24/7 immediate counseling support to students. Visit CAPS during regular office hours or call anytime at 707-664-2153 for support (after hours press 2 to be connected with a crisis counselor).

Our thoughts are with Calee’s family and friends and the whole campus community.
